"I am The Master. You will obey ... me!"

Discussion topics covering soundtrack album mastering rarely surface onto thread headers, if at all.
Within threads on individual albums, though, some posters might chat about album masters - particularly if dissatisfied about resultant sound quality.

I wish to bring forward such discussion by highlighting those names whose appearances on album credits occur most frequently [within my CD music collection, at any rate (past LPs typically did not offer credits in this area)].

Alphabetical by surname, they are:

  • Douglass Fake: no introduction is likely needed for Intrada's grand poohbah who had typically done his own mastering for his own label. Since 2011, Joe Tarantino has been the primary mastering engineer for Intrada.

  • Claudio Fuiano: If you don't collect Italian soundtracks, you may not be familiar with this name. However, Mr. Fuiano not only restores vintage studio session tapes for recordings done in Italy he also provides album masters for the majority of the European soundtrack labels (Saimel, Quartet, Legend, Kronos, GDM Club/ GDM-Legend, Cinevox, & Beat Records) and is the in-house Master editor & designer for Digitmovies.

  • Daniel Hersch: while distributing album masters to Intrada, Varese Sarabande and La-La Land (amongst others), he apparently works on only vintage titles from 20th Century Fox studios.

  • Erick Labson: the Master of choice for Robert Townson's Varese Sarabande Club CDs, Labson has also done work for FSM and a few others.

  • Mike Matessino: MM usually works on 1980s & '90s blockbuster items (including STAR TREK), but he also has done some masters on vintage Golden Age appearing on Kritzerland.

  • James Nelson: perhaps THE Master of all, James Nelson of Digital Outland provides services for Bruce Kimmel's Kritzerland and also La-La Land. Mr. Nelson has worked with Ford A. Thaxton, both in the past (on Prometheus albums) and presently (on BuySoundtrax projects) and sometimes produces soundtracks, too!

  • Doug Schwartz: chief Master responsible for most (if not all) of FSM's catalogue, Mr. Schwartz has also issued album masters for Intrada, La-La Land & Counterpoint.

  • Patricia Sullivan (Fourstar): the only female Master (or should that be Mistress smile ) that I've encountered thus far on my readings of album credits, Ms. Sullivan works only on new releases.
Her name appears regularly on recent soundtracks by James Newton Howard, for example.

  • Joe Tarantino: apparently the current in-house Master for Intrada.

  • Daniel Winkler: frequently an associate with Claudio Fuiano on Italian soundtracks, Mr. Winkler has also done album masters, especially for Ennio Morricone titles on GDM Club CDs.

The list above is certainly not comprehensive. It is not intended to be. There are many other people in this field providing mastering services to the record producers of our beloved labels.
My apologies for omissions. I make special mentions for Jose Luis Crespo (Quartet), Enrico De Gemini (Beat Records), Ray Faiola, Chas Ferry (Perseverance), Alexis Frenkel (Universal France), Christophe Henault (Music Box) & Gareth Williams (Prometheus & Tadlow) because I love their work on soundtrack albums, but they simply do not figure as prominently as the 10 folks above.

I particularly wish to refer readers to Perseverance Records' release of David Newman's THE RUNESTONE. Inside this album's liner notes, producer Robin Esterhammer describes in detail the hows and whys soundtracks can take 24 months (or greater) in production pipelines.

It is perhaps no exaggeration to say that, behind each record producer, there's a Master exerting influence. smile

Yes, by all means add more names.

I don't recall seeing Mr. Malone credited with mastering, though his name may very well be in the credits of albums I own in the area of tape restorations.
