Story Teller:
The Spy Who Loved Me
is a wonderful Bond film. It's a fun ride from start to finish. It was a huge hit and is beloved the world round. So I certainly wouldn't take Richard's word on this one.

A lot of people who know better than you share the view that The Spy Who Loved Me is an awful Bond film, unexciting, boring, woodenly acted, unfunny and stupid, stupid, stupid. A lot of people think so, but no one wants to get attacked personally by expressing their opinion

Oh brother! Somebody whip out the zeppelin, we'll be able to fill it up and take flight in no time after that post.

Storyteller, I'm sure that "a lot of people better than you" or I probably feel that "unfunny and stupid, stupid, stupid" equally applies to the poster of that comment but "no one wants to get attacked personally by expressing their opinion"

Except me, of course. Me? I don't give a shit.

, ...or poor Michel Lonsdale having to ask why Bond killed the python in order to give us the worst joke in the whole series of films .

Please, remind us .. smile

Sharn't.

Oh, c'mon!

It was something like "he developed a crush on me"

Yes, that's the one. "

i thought it was "the pen was mightier than the sword"

whatever, my point is a film with "jokes" like this is actually rated higher than SKYFALL by some id.. idd.. idi on this board, who shall go unnamed.

"W' is right on this one.

Oh yes I recall the identical skiing / parachute scene in You Only Live Twice. And the submarine car. And that scene at the end when Bond goes back to the bad guy's lair on a wet bike to rescue Kissy. And those scenes with Connery in Cairo were pretty much the same as those in The Spy Who Loved me too.

All this and the fact that both films featured a Russian female spy too. Hell even the Hamlisch score is a blatant rip off of Barry's. Blimey, they are shot-for-shot identical movies!!!

But what I really can't stand about The Spy Who Loved Me are all those scenes in which Roger Moore is disguised as a Japanese fisherman. Connery did it so much better in all the exact same scenes in You Only Live Twice.

I'm quite sure that Bond was never in Japan in TSWLM. He was, however, dressed in Egyptian robes (and who wouldn't be?) when he travelled by camel to see his Egyptian contact. And there were scenes when Bond and Agent XXX bought passage on a small Egyptian boat back to Cairo after Jaws wrecked their van, but he was dressed in (I think) a tuxedo.

But I could be wrong. It's hard to keep track when all the Bond movies are essentially the same movie! big grin

My name's Mitch. smile

But to confuse matters: I rated The Spy Who Loved Me the poorest of the series (challenged by Quantum of Solace) whereas its remake (basic storyline) Moonraker has always been a highly entertaining movie ... despite the awful jokes, et al.

Having watched Skyfall three times I struggle to find its entertaining features and whilst neither of those Roger Moore films are near my top JB007 favourites, I still prefer both to this latest offering.

nuts-score, you are full of shit and, to my eyes, have the least interesting and most shallow opinions on the Bond franchise I have ever in my life had the misfortune of reading.

At least your enthusiasm for film music doesn't diminish your mediocrity.

What an original piece! Thank you so much for the kind words. big grin

Screw it! Let's just make our own Bond film. Why not? Everyone else has. smile

Erm.... you need to take my comment in the overall context of the post.

I'm a Bond fan. I loved Casino Royale and I actually liked Quantum of Solace. Forgetting the "Jason Bourne" comparisons, I liked how Bond simply cared about what he was doing.

So speaking as a fan of Daniel Craig's work, Skyfall did absolutely nothing for me. Bond tries to apprehend the bad guy, gets accidentally shot off a train, survives, and chooses to quit on his job. What? Roger Moore got tossed off a train in Octopussy and he hitchhiked in order to catch up with it.Bond just quits because he was accidentally shot?

And that new Q.
"What were you expecting, explosive pens? We don't make those anymore"

You really should. Not only was the explosive pen one of the more practical gadgets Bond has used in his movies, it also took part in one of my favorite suspenseful moments in all the Bond movies. Was it three consecutive clicks, or three immediate ones? I get it that the overuse of gadgets in Bond movies was one of the harshest criticisms, especially for Brosnan's era, but at least they didn't hold the audience's hand so they could 'get it'. Skyfall's gadget gun only works when Bond is using it. There. That's all you needed to say. But no, let's put multi-colored lights onto it so the audience will know that this gadget does indeed work for only Bond. When we get to the scene where a bad guy picks the gun up, let's have him slowly raise the gun so the audience can see the red lights and have Bond say "That isn't going to work". We know!

Thats a terrific post, Jeyl. I agree with it completely.

As a matter of amusement, the little palm-reader gadget was previously in License To Kill, a movie thats 25 years old now. Why is Q making tech thats almost three decades old? wink

Wot?
It's not even a question of "overall context, mate". You hate TSWLM, and to emphasize it you used a specific scene (or scenes), that turns out to not even be in the movie!
So in this instance it's all about the details.
Hate it all you want (in fact, I often share some of your criticisms), but you have to get the details straight if you want to maintain credibility.

If you re-read Mike_J's postings ...

... I think you'll find you're accusing the wrong contributor here. Mr. J. particularly likes TSWLM.

You are quite right. Mike's use of irony shot right past me without recognition.
I seem to be irony-impaired this morn.
My apologies to Mike.

Can we please get back to more of an examination of Caroline Munro? big grin

No worries mate. I did think it a bit strange, since Mitch is absolutely right - TSWLM is my all time favourite Bond movie.

And yes Caroline Munro was lovely in it - love the little wink she gives Rog just before she tries to blow up the Esprit. Although I always really loved Barbara Bach to be honest.
