I mean the 20-plus-volume Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

I found my 1980 paperbound set at an estate sale. Way-cheap.

Re: Anybody else gotta Grove's?

Kinda did a double take when I saw that. I think that "gotta" is used mostly as a contraction for "got to," not "got a" --otherwise why do a contraction that is the same length (5 spaces)?

Had long been tempted to buy a Groves, but in my early 20s I bought soooooooooo many volumes of Pelican's history of music as well as other volumes on the symphony, the concerto, chamber music, opera (I think) and too many others to remember (all of which provided endless pleasure for me) that I chose not to spend the money on a Groves.

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't own 20+ volumes of the Grove Dictionary.

I do have quite a number of other music reference books still boxed up in storage, though ...

I don't know which edition you're talking about, but for what it's worth, I wrote a Salter entry and a Skinner entry for Groves New Dictionary...

When you've gotta Groves, you've gotta Groves.

"Always scribble, scribble, scribble, eh, Mr. Gibbon?" big grin

Congratulations on another superior credit, Preston.

You should be able to find at least the main New Grove in any decent library. And you may very well gain access to the complete Oxford Music Online through your own public or university library or through the state library system. These resources (and many others) are "out there." Your tax dollars at work! It's a pity that so many libraries have failed to let people know about the available materials.
