Today's L.A. Times contains an L.A. Phil/Hollywood Bowl concert review by the paper's esteemed and astringent music critic, Mark Swed. Not surprisingly, he has few kind words for what was apparently a "crossover" performance programmed by Joshua Bell (and featuring Glenn Close), but to my pleasant surprise he has quite a few respectful things to say about the late Franz Waxman and his contributions to cinema and to L.A. culture.
And John Williams is the opening event of the Phil season. Film music begins to climb up the status ladder.
Ah, but to have been in LA during those prime Franz Waxman, Alfred Newman and Miklos Rozsa days when they did regular local events like that one above, BUT I have seen some pretty impressive things in my lifetime so I stay grateful.
Fascinating list and Mauceri commentary. Thank you, Jeff. To think that so many of these works had never been heard on the West Coast until Waxman helped to open the door!
