This album has eluded me - I've never stumbled across a copy in a store - but there are zillion copies for a dollar - or a penny - on the InterBays.

Is it half decent?

Grab it. It's probably the best Mancini compilation.

I'm not one for compilations in general, but this doozy introduced me to many a great Mancini theme. Highly recommended!

What I like about the track list is that I have a ton of Mancini but I barely have anything on here.

A stunning album that is a must for any film music fan....

The Man was a master composer, but a rather great conductor and the really good album producer.

If you don't have it, GET IT NOW!!

The music from White Dawn is a knockout.

Onya, "knowing" you from your posts, I don't think you'll like it, apart from a few bits. Too many comb-over era tracks. But I hope you prove me wrong. I hate to think of you wasting a cent on it. Oh, and you HAVE seen the cover, haven't you?

There must be a million Mancini compilations available pretty cheap. I picked this one up recently for a few pennies as well...

Yes, but a distinction should be made.

Whilst there are many compilation albums available, the subject of the thread Mancini in Surround is not one of those.

It may be a compilation of themes composed by Mr. Mancini, but it is a proper studio album, not simply a collection of tracks from various sources compiled by the record/CD label (or their agents).

I think the word compilation is used too loosely. We wouldn't call one of Frank Sinatra's classic albums from the 1950s, such as Songs for Swingin' Lovers! a compilation even though it's a collection of songs ... whereas his album Sings the Select Cole Porter which pulls together a number of his recordings from various original albums is such.

So: Mancini in Surround ... a wonderful late album by this Maestro towards the end of his career. Depending upon your taste the material is not the same as those compilations of material from the 1960s and 70s but some of the tracks are truly great. It's a long album and I will often play the second half, starting after his 1950's suites despite this leaving out some wonderful material.

It's one of my oldest CDs and, when played over Dolby Surround (perhaps 5.1), it sounds really good. The final track, Sunset Theme is one of his best ... and sticks in the mind for ages afterwards.

The best thing to me about this album is how well it showcases the range of what Mancini could do away from the easy-listening idiom. And how well it plays - a rewarding, varied listen. Though I sure wish he had thrown in the Lifeforce theme.

Another great old compilation I picked up in recent years is this one, Premier Pops

It's got more of the easy-listening vibe, but also a great number of less familiar pieces, including my favorite, his medley of TV themes with Newhart and Remington Steele.

Musicmad has got it right. Except for making film scores, Henry Mancini was also a recording artist. In surround and Premier pops were some of his last albums. Recommended

I think Premiere Pops is my favorite Mancini CD. I could listen to that Newhart theme all day.

We'll always have Kunzel...

Yes, and I picked up the Kunzel for that very reason. But I want it surrounded with other Mancini goodness!

(The Kunzel Star Tracks 2 is a fine compilation that I ignored for too many years. Mostly because the sound effects turned me off on the first album. Fussy, fussy, fussy!)
