I just got the 2 D.V.D. set of "Aliens" and found out that it has the theatrical version and the expanded edition with 13 minutes of footage that was seen on its first television airing. One question I would like to know: Was there more music by James Horner that was not heard on the theatrical version or the Varese Sarabande Deluxe Edition C.D.?

The ALIENS: DELUXE EDITION has everything heard in either version of the film. The only thing missing is the film version of the drop ship cue which is not by James Horner but by Harry Rabinowitz.

The Varese CD will have some Horner cues not even heard in the final picture, notably the brief but intense clarinet sliding wildly up the scale when Newt sees a face hugger.

(by the way who thinks the ALIENS: DE sounds not so good? I wish this one would come back out again with better remastered sound from better elements No offense to the people who worked on it.)

The ALIENS DE sounds better than the initial release for sure, but right: just think about the splendid recording of BRAINSTORM a few years earlier, again with the LSO.

I'm not excactly a Horner fan, but this is one of the few scores of him I do adore and worthy of another buy even if there is no new content added.

I would buy it again for that dropship cue.

Yes. BRAINSTORM needs a proper expanded reissue. The OST is oop. Lets hope Varese gets to it this year.

Well it did get a proper release in 1983 when VARESE paid for James Horner to go to the UK and do an album recording with the LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and The Ambrosian Singers that as far as I recall covers all of the major cues from the score.

It's a stunning score that very well recorded and was one of the best sounding LPS and CDS that VARESE ever released.

While the CD is out of print at this time, it's still available on ITUNES:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/brainstorm-original-motion/id136168709
(international folks need to check their local ITUNES if you wish to purchase it)

So it's still very available

Now beyond putting out the original recording for the sake of putting it out, what EXACTLY IS MISSING from this album that matters, how many minutes of score didn't he include EXACTLY?

Anyone know exactly?

To begin with the the Varese OST is re-recording with LSO and Junior Ambrosian Choir. The film recording for the score was done in LA. There are about 5 minutes of music that's in the film and NOT on the re-recording. Besides a remaster of both plus better liner notes and the premier release of the film recordings( with alternates) makes a very good case as an expanded 2cd set.

There are a couple of threads on the topic here. The fanboys would love to have it.

I would buy it again for that dropship cue.

I personally wouldn't, it's on blu-ray set (isolated), good enough for me. For me 'Aliens' has had its share of releases, even re-recordings (Cliff Eidelman) and live recording (Biomechanical Symphony).

I'd be happy if someone would just re-record the Rabinowitz cue and put it out digitally.

I've mis-placed my ALIENSbig grinE disc from my collection. So I wouldn't mind to upgrade again. I.E If a new mastered edition is on the horizon. I'd grab it.

Thus making BAD TO FANBOYS!!!!

The film recording for the score was done in LA. There are about 5 minutes of music that's in the film and NOT on the re-recording

Which Im sure are the 5 BEST MINUTES OF THE ENTIRE SCORE THAWT HONER left off by mistake, right?

Besides a remaster of both plus better liner notes and the premier release of the film recordings( with alternates) makes a very good case as an expanded 2cd set.

You of course assume there are alternates..

Given the the album is about 30 minutes and the full soundtrack is about 35 minutes, it could easily fit onto a single CD.

There are a couple of threads on the topic here. The fanboys would love to have it.

I'm sure that they would, but why spend the time and resources on this, even the existing album is just fine to start with?

In any case Varese should do it. The OST nowhere to be seen. But as an expanded 2cd set it would be great to have an archival representation of this fine score the way La La Land records does for albums such as The Fury & Batman. In fact they have a 'brand ' recognition for such expansion models. Check them out.

I think the existing DE is perfect as it is, it contains the complete Horner score in stunning sound. I don't see much room for improvement here (never cared for the piece used to replace Combat Drop).

But if it is hard to find these days I would be in favor of a new release, as it is one of those scores that should be kept in print.

On the other hand Alien3 is the one really in need of expansion, if the tapes do exist...

I would enjoy a CD of Brainstorm with both versions of the score, much like "Damian: Omen II" had both the album and film version of the score for that film on one disc. I enjoy some of the film takes more than the album, but love the album recording a great deal.

As for Aliens, the "Queen to Bishop" cue sounds like it was mixed differently on the CD than in the film. I wouldn't mind a "film version" of that cue also. But I'm primarily good with the CD as is.

While there no additional music in the expanded edition (which James Cameron preferred over the theatrical release), some of the music heard in the theatrical release version was tracked in other scenes in the expanded edition, and of course, one of the Goldsmith cues was tracked in one of the scenes where Ripley kills one of the aliens.

FYI, the ALIEN bluray boxset is available for very cheap these days and the bluray of Aliens is astounding (as is Alien)...if you have a bluray player, I highly recommend you upgrade from the DVD set smile

Didn't his cues come in when the Queen shows herself just as Ripley and Newt were going into the elevator, and another track (Parker's Death I believe) when Ripley finds out that there is no dropship.

maybe for the same reason why would anyone spend any time and resources on something like Warriors of the Virtue?
