I can't believe we post on a board where I have to preface this, but: I'm not ungrateful.

However, if the Pod Monster Suite is the same as on the old CD, then once again we don't get the alternate version of the peice where Mulder and Scully escape out of the ship before it takes off.

There's about 8 minutes of new music on this release going by the running time. "Quitting" is the early statement of the great little theme that gets more fleshed out in "Already Dead" and "Plague", etc. "Elders / Crossroads" -- no idea what the "Elders" bit could be, and I'm assuming the "Crossroads" portion of the cue is the "Threnody in X" edit used in the film. Maybe "Space Hole" could contain the great action cue where M&S are climbing up the tunnel with the aliens on their tail? Hope so. Still leaves out that fantastic ending cue though.

I'll of course still be buying this immediately on release either way. Excited. razz

Another welcome addition to La-la's already excellent X-files releases!

Great news! This really makes my day.

But surely that tracklist is wrong; like others said:
- that unbelievable finale cue is indeed missing (which is for me personally in my top 3 unreleased cues from the 90s)
- the film version of Crossroads can already be heard in Threnody in X (unless it's an alternate take or so?), but it's editorially shortened
- the fantastic alternate ending to Pod Monster Suite seems to be missing as well?

- Yes, "Quitting" is virtually identical to the opening of "Plague", but with a slightly different last few seconds.
- "Elders" is a quite slow and silent variation on the X-Files theme, but probably the most interesting addition here (besides the unheard alternate "Plague" segment)
- "Crossroads" is as far as I know an edited part of the second part of "Threnody in X" (which is composed of the first part of the prologue and the film version of "Crossroads")
- "Space Hole" is a very atmospheric cue, more sounds really, that accompany Mulder's descent into the ice - it's not that action cue.

If the tracklist is correct, I think this is not meant as an expansion in any way, but more as a reissue of the score - which would explain the missing highlights and the front cover.

I'm pretty sure the music heard when Mulder finds the hole in the ice is actually just tracked in edits of "Plague" and the Mystery Motif portion of "Already Dead" (guess Carter thought "Ice Base" was too grand sounding, for the same reason he probably threw out the otherwise amazing "Crossroads"). There is some unreleased music in that sequence when he's in the tunnels, but it's not a full 2+ minutes worth. Hmmm.

My understanding is that this cue was done at the very last second (As I recall the scene in question was a added to the film at the last minute, I could be wrong) and Mark just knocked it out at his studio and sent it over to the dub stage and that DAT or D-88 has vanished in the last 16 years.

He didn't have a copy in his archive either. It happens.

As I further recall (and I could be mistaken), "Threnody in X " comprises both the Opening titles and the film version of "Crossroads", the cue called "Crossroads" on the album as I recall was the first version of this piece that Mark redid to include more of the "X Files" Theme.

What a loss, that cue is incredible. Doubly so if it's something Snow just tossed off last minute.

Oh no. What a disappointment. This is the cue I actually learnt to rip the separate DVD channels for, all those years ago.

Was the alternate second part of Pod Monster Suite not found either?

You're talking about the "Ice Base" cue that was indeed replaced in the film by tracked portions from other cues. There's indeed a 2-minute cue following that.

In case I wasn't clear, kudos to LLL and Mr Redman and Matessino for expanding what is hands down one of the best scores of the 90s.

Regardless of what may or may not be missing, it will be great to listen to this score in better sound quality. The OST really sounds off in places. And the distortion in Crater Hug always bugged me.

Then why not use the film stem, ala Hook?

well this missing final cue is disheartening. however it is heartening to get this news out of the blue and see a pretty active thread on it right from the get-go. nice to see there are still active, and very knowledgeable!, fans out there. hopefully la la land keeps right on trucking with more scores from the show.

Not really a Snow fan, but I like this score. Love the more complex energetic take of the main theme.

Please consider that La-La Land is the company who went to all the trouble of annihilating a whole batch of CDs just to bring us "The Challenge" with that certain alternate cue that many have come to love from the original album.

I'm sure if there had been any reasonable way to include this track, MV would have been the first to do so. wink

This of course does not change the fact that the whole matter is indeed regrettable, alas IMHO the focus of this thread should be on saying thanks to La-La Land for bringing us yet another gem that many of us never would have dreamed to see the light of day! smile

Cheers!

If that blurb in the original post was what the X-Files website had originally said, it's been changed now with more information. I went there and among the new info', is a release date:
