It'll wait.

"Strictly limited to 1,000 copies."

Oh. It can't wait. Ordered.

Why is it even limited? With a price tag like this, I'm sure a printing-on-demand option has to be doable..

My understanding is the first edition is limited to a 1,000 copies.

Dear SIGERSON --

I told you to keep watching the skies, and never to give up hope -- remember?

smile

Sweet dreams,

Preston

Many thanks, Preston, and . . . CONGRATULATIONS!

So relieved that we are both still alive to see it.

I'm gonna dust off that space I've been saving between "Heaven and Hell to Play With" and "The Magic Factory"!

Shipping costs are annoying, no doubt.

But complaining about the lack of pictures? In the old civilized days, such books were part of literature as it was meant to be.

I remember a special forum I left because my posts were not much appreciated because of the lack of web links or fancy pics to make up for superficial content.

If this is a book for readers, it will be a success. I'm pretty sure 97% of the potential buyers have ST:TMP's music by Jerry Goldsmith on their shelves anyway, the latest La-La Land release or priors: put it on while reading, have plenty of your own pics in your head.

I'm interested in this but are there excerpts or chapter lists anywhere?

"672-page oral history in the words of sixty of the film’s cast and creators"-- is this just a dump of interview transcripts or is there additional editing, analysis, commentary, flow, etc. to put it all together?

I can see a case for some new, unreleased photos or early artwork showing early concepts or behind the scenes shots. Remember, this thing was shuffled about between several effects houses and some things were even built and filmed. It's a documentation of a very visual process, not a novel.

Seeing as how this was originally going to be presented in the magazine Cinefantastique a while back, then yes, it's all been edited to be presented in a readable format. It's just a lot of detail.

Preston,

a novel is only a branch of literature. Somebody reviews a score on a message board with his/her own words and I call this social literature as well: coming from a burger flipper or a Harvard jock, I don't care.

Two sentences can give a big value for years to come. A 19" pic of a spaceship may cloak at least 40 sentences but taking up space nevertheless.

Good luck with your book anyway! If your next book is about the career of Scarlett Johansson, I shall be your most fiercy foe for not including any pics!

I have to laugh at the question of editing as opposed to a bunch of interviews...

The two CFQ special issues which preceded this one, for STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, were indeed nothing but one interview after another, (averaging 20 per issue). For the ST-TMP issue, I interviewed not 20 but 60 people, and one reason why it took ages before editor Fred Clarke could receive my ms. is because I completely re-worked the material so that it is not Q & A at all but rather what I like to call a montage of memories. I eliminated my questions entirely, and then cut back and forth from one person to another. The result is a round-robin discussion of reminiscences from those sixty participants, with occasional interstitial commentary from me where necessary. Anyone familiar with my previous tome, "Heaven and Hell to Play With: The Filming of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER," knows what to expect from "Return to Tomorrow," but on a much, much grander scale.

As with "Heaven and Hell," there are no chapters, per se, but three sections comprising Pre-Productiion (HAILING FREQUENCIES OPEN), Production (THRUSTERS AHEAD), and Post-Production (READY OR NOT, SHE LAUNCHES), with an epilog (STARFLEET COMMISSION REACTIVATED). There will indeed be samples you can read at various Trek websites, and as soon as they're online we'll post the pertinent links here.

Greetings, Dr. Jones!
What a SHAME you didn't interview ME way back when as I could have regaled you and Star Trek Nation with the tale of Mr. Shatner coming to my high school somewhere between the end of the TV run and like 5 years before ST: TMP. He was doing Bell, Book and Candle [I think] off-off-Broadway and they got him to come over and address 2 humanities classes. He was great with us teenagers (anyone remember London Lee yeh Heh HEH?). Hard to believe this sort of thing happened but hey, it was the days before the ST phenomenon spoiled him rotten.

Anyway, ye new tome has been ordered. Will give it the same treatment as ye olde here

Hey, October is getting closer. When should we be expecting the book to ship?

Hey I'm glad you bumped this because I was just about to search the board for any news, myself. I went over to their site and it still says "late October". Definitely looking forward to this, especially since, way back in the Summer, I ordered other stuff with it that hasn't shipped. (Since in-stock stuff was bundled with pre-orders, I guess the whole thing ships at once, when the pre-order is available. It's understandable that unlike an Amazon, they likely can't break orders up). Anyhow, I digress. Really excited for this book, but it's always fun to have something to anticipate. Remember the LONG wait for the massive TOS CD Box Set? (aka The Gift That Keeps On Giving) smile

It's now late October. I am chomping on the bit, drooling with anticipation, and breaking wind waiting for my copy. When will I be able to expect it so my mailman can drop it off in front of my door?

I've received neither an order confirmation nor a shipping notice from Creature Features. They extracted the funds from my Paypal account, though. I'll continue to wait.
