I'm wondering whether there's going to be a Special Edition release to Michael Giacchino's Star Trek Into Darkness score or not? I've always assumed that there was going to be one, based on the short length of the original album (and the fact that the first movie had a SE release), but so far nothing has been announced yet (if so, I've missed it completely). Just checked the release dates of the two albums for the first movie, and the Special Edition was released 13 month after the original album, and STID was released May 14th 2013. So shouldn't we at least have heard an announcement yet?

Anyone here who knows anything about this? smile

Also hoping for this... Love this score and the album was way too short.

If memory serves someone asked Giacchino to a recent Live To Projection and I think there is one being planned or in the works...can't remember what was said. I just hope it's handled better than the Deluxe Edition of 2009.

I remember there was some fuzz with that release (some missing choir, right?), but to be honest, nothing that ever bothered me. It's one of my favorite albums, and I like it much better than the original album.

Well not only choir was missing (except from the OST tracks) from the Trek 09 set it still had cues carried over from the OST (edited) and was missing the percussion dubs. Although I could understand it if the percussion dubs were missing and maybe the choir if the fees were too high. However it seemed a little like a personal edit compared to an intended release like the other Trek scores have been done.

On Reddit, someone asked the following:

Hi, Mr. Reeves and Mr. Giacchino! Thank you so much for doing this!

Mr. Giacchino: Will there be a deluxe edition soundtrack for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS? If so, when can we expect it? How about JOHN CARTER?

Mr. Giacchino: Will there ever be a soundtrack release for Seasons 3, 4, and 5 of ALIAS? ALCATRAZ? Will there be a compilation of your scores for Pixar shorts?

Michael Giacchino's response:

1) I would love for there to be a STID deluxe edition and hopefully you will get your wish soon. And I hadn't thought about John Carter, but I would love to put together a full version of that cd for release, I would like to, but as of this time there are no plans for it.

2) I don't know. As far as Alias and Alcatraz, I always feel that hole left by not having finished the soundtrack releases, and I would like to do that. It's harder for the projects that didn't do as well as you would have hoped to get things like that done. I hope so (re: Pixar shorts). I hope that there will be. There's definitely been between my Disney and Pixar shorts enough music to release, so hopefully we will be able to do that soon.

I haven't bought the existing release in anticipation of a special edition, and yes I don't mind the wait.

Have you at least heard the score then? Because if not, then you've missed out on a really great score (albeit short). smile

But sounds like something is in the works, and that's cool.

And BTW, hoping there will be an expanced score to John Carter down the line as well.

Hoping it's as good as the ST09 Deluxe Edition, in the sense that it added at LOT of great tracks to an already great original album. smile
