MONDAY, JULY 21

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII---photo released showing JJ Abrams with an X-Wing Fighter and its pilot. Also, a rumor claims the sequel plot involves Luke Skywalker's severed robot hand gripping a Lightsabre being found by a Stormtrooper and a female character who deliver it to Han Solo and Chewbacca. The rumor also says a new Death Star-type weapon is being built on an ice planet.

THE WALKING DEAD---Season 5 poster released.

THE OVERLOOK HOTEL---Mark Romanek (NEVER LET ME GO, ONE HOUR PHOTO) is in negotiations to direct the prequel to THE SHINING. "...the film will tell the origin story of the Overlook Hotel through the eyes of its first owner, Bob T. Watson. A robber baron at the turn of the 20th century, Watson scaled the remote peaks of the Colorado Rockies to build the grandest resort in America, and a place he and his family would also call home."

BROWNIE WISE---Sandra Bullock stars in this Sony Pictures biomovie based on the book TUPPERWARE UNSEALED about Brownie Wise, the woman who pioneered the Tupperware home party strategy. Tate Taylor (THE HELP) is the writer/director.

THE FLASH---writer/producer Geoff Johns, who is also executive producer of BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, said Batman and Superman won't appear on THE FLASH and ARROW, "You'll see a lot of DC universe characters [on The The Flash and Arrow]. You won't see Batman or Superman. We're on production on Batman v Superman now. So you'll see characters like The Atom or Firestorm, but no not Batman or Superman right now [on TV].
It's a separate universe than film so that the filmmakers can tell the story that's best for film. While we explore something different in a different corner of the DC universe. We will not be integrating the film and television universes."
Also, on THE FLASH, Wentworth Miller will have a recurring role as Captain Cold.

HERCULES---Kevin Sorbo (HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS) said he was turned down for a cameo in the movie by director Brett Ratner, "Dwayne Johnson and I used to work out at the same gym, nice guy. We were sort of taken back they wouldn't let me in that movie, not even do a cameo. I think it's kind of stupid really. I'm still on all over America, on Netflix, on Hub, on Encore. I'm still in, like, 50 countries around the world. It was the most-watched show in the world in the '90s, passing BAYWATCH... it's taking the business out of show business, and it's just kinda stupid....We approached the director. I don’t know what his reasons are. I don't know if it was political or ego or what it is? To not put me in for a stupid little cameo? The audience would have loved it."

PRIME SUSPECT---Lynda La Plante is writing a new book, TENNISON, about Jane Tennison in her 20s. She hinted a tv series is underway and talked about who would replace Helen Mirren in the role, "I don't want a face that's well known. A search will go out to every drama school and acting academy. She has to explode onto the screen...Helen Mirren has a very rare quality as an actress. She has an incredible weight to her, and stillness."

THE LAST WITCH HUNTER---Michael Caine will co-star with Vin Diesel and Rose Leslie in this movie about an immortal witch hunter and a witch who team up to save mankind from a coven which plans to unleash a deadly plague in New York.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY---director James Gunn said he's returning for the sequel if the original movie is successful, "I'm actually in a somewhat weird position because if the movie does well, then I'm gonna make the sequel. And if it does okay then, well, I've already been offered other movies but I can only do those other movies if I don't do the sequel, so it's a weird situation."

THE RING 3---a third movie in the series is underway. F. Javier Gutierrez is the director.

SPACE INVADERS---movie underway based on the arcade game. Akiva Goldsman is a co-producer.

NOSTRADAMUS---Joseph Fiennes stars in this tv series underway about the famous clairvoyant who seeks revenge on his family's killers.

BORDERTOWN---new Fox/Seth McFarlane/Mark Hentemann animated series set on a US/Mexico bordertown. Hank Azaria, Missi Pyle and Alex Borstein provide the voices.

AALIYAH: PRINCESS OF R&B---Alexandra Shipp has replaced Zendaya Coleman in the Lifetime biomovie.

LMAO! You know the funny thing is Hollywood is so bankrupted I can't necessarily discount such silly rumors.

Edit:

This is an original Ralph McQuarrie X-Wing design! eek

I have to say my first take at looking at it was that it was a Z-95 Headhunter, except they only have 2 guns and not 4 smile

Here's a better look. It's clearly based off of the concept paintings and sketches before the model makers got a hold of the design for Star Wars. The only thing different are the absence of those vertical struts inside the engine intakes.

That's pure Ralph McQuarrie, although I think I prefer the original film's full circular rather than the half circular intake aperture on the X-wing's wingy-thingy. I'd love to know how it performs so aerodynamically while in a vacuum. Add to that it's VTOL capability - all without any apparent directional jets - and you'd have to conclude the darned thing is propelled by pure popcorn!

Edit: It looks to me the wings don't have enough 'chord,' for want of a better description, to be able to separate as in the case of the X-wing. Looks more like the fixed pods of the Y-wing. As it clearly isn't a Y-wing the closest thing I can approximate it to is a T-wing, with a fanboy/Jane's codename of "Twing!"

Honestly, all that money, all that time, all the possibilities... and THIS is what they might go with??
I guess the 3rd time's the charm.

I don't suppose any pictures exist of Abrams getting sucked up into that engine...?

I guess JJ is a fan of Battlestar Galactica: Gun on Ice Planet Zero!

Lucasfilm confirmed it's an X-Wing Fighter and not a Z-95 Headhunter.

The Z-95 Headhunter is no longer canon in the Star Wars universe, as it did not appear in the films or the Clone Wars series.

It is funny how talky JJ is with Star Wars when he was pretty silent on Star Trek.
It is like he gave up on this one, too bad. I thought the secret approach was the way to go.

Abrams took a lot of flack for the whole "Kahn Reveal" in the last Trek film and he agreed it went overboard to protect what was essentially a silly thing to hide. He promised not to do that on future projects.

Also, moreso than even Star Trek, Star Wars is a big-ol' brand. Lucasfilm and Disney are the ones dictating the marketing of this one, and they aren't going to let Abrams stimy or muddy the promotion of this movie. Besides, the toys, novel, storybooks, coloring books, iPhone apps, etc are going to be in stores before the movie premieres, and everyone will know that ship is called an X-wing in Episode VII.

I'm still behind Abrams hiding Khan's identity in STID, since it was played in the movie as a plot twist or revelation of sorts. Whether THAT was the right move, is questionable, but since it was written/filmed that way, Abrams kept his mouth shut.

Yeah, well that is true, but that is kind a different situation because they were recycling a character with a new actor. The whole Khan recycle was surely a big letdown, especially when we are swapping Ricardo Montalban with a pasty British guy. Sorry Benedict is a fine actor, but he never impressed me like Montalban, there was an intelligence and suaveness to his performance that Benedict never got close to.

A version of it does appear in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, actually.
