Check out at about 48:50 mark. Sadly it's an MST3K episode so it's hard to hear with all the chattering over the film.

Nah, just a locomotive-sounding see-sawing motif with superficial similarities. I wouldn't write home about it really.

The reality is that the minor second melodic interval is one of the most common in all music. What gives it character, such as the shark theme in JAWS, is how it's presented in tempo, rhythm, key, orchestration and instrumentation. All of those components is what makes the shark theme notable in JAWS and Williams's use of it brilliant.

The cue in question is Milton Rosen's "Salvage of the Lady Luck," which was originally composed for the movie CITY BENEATH THE SEA (with Robert Ryan and Anthony Quinn), and re-used in both CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, which used re-recordings of the original "CITY" cue. Speaking of re-recordings, this cue is on our Monstrous Movie Music CD "Creature From the Black Lagoon (and other jungle pictures)."

And if there are any Creature lovers out there, on November 8th at 2 p.m., Dark Delicacies in Burbank will be celebrating the 60th "birthday" of The Gill Man.

I will be signing copies of the new McFarland book "The Creature Chronicles: Exploring the Black Lagoon Trilogy." Although largely written by the amazing Tom Weaver (and with additional contributions from Steve Kronenberg), I wrote four chapters on the films' music, so I get to sign, too! Joining the festivities and also signing will be Julie Adams (star of the movie and an author in her own right -- she penned the book's wonderful introduction), Rex Reason (THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US, THIS ISLAND EARTH), Gregg Palmer (THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US, FROM HELL IT CAME, ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU), and hopefully Brett Halsey (REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, THE ATOMIC SUBMARINE, RETURN OF THE FLY).

Adding to the 1950s sci-fi/monster fun will be Coleen Gray (THE LEECH WOMAN, NIGHTMARE ALLEY), Joyce Meadows (THE BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS, MEN INTO SPACE, THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR), Donna Martell (PROJECT MOON BASE, ROCKY JONES SPACE RANGER), Kathleen Hughes (CULT OF THE COBRA, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE), artist Robert Aragon, and plenty of other surprises and guests. We'll even be serving "Creature food" that the Gill Man would enjoy. More details will follow as this fun event begins to take further shape!

Thxs for the fascinating response. Until recently I had no idea those old "B" movies tracked a lot of music from other films.

I've mentioned this before a long time ago, but I can distinctly hear the 'Jaws' theme in a scene from 'Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde' - the Spencer Tracy version. And this score is marvelous by Franz Waxman.

Whether many of the "B" pictures the studios churned out received tracked scores or not often had little to do with the budget and more to do with exactly what the staff composers were doing at the time music was needed, as well as other considerations, such as whether it was believed that tracked music would suffice. That's why more prestigious pictures like CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON used some tracked music, while throwaway pictures like THE MOLE PEOPLE had an entirely original score done by Heinz Roemheld, Hans J. Salter, and Herman Stein.

REVENGE OF THE CREATURE had some wonderful original cues composed by William Lava, as well as some original moments from Herman Stein, but for the most part was a rehash of cues either written for the original Gill Man movie or tracked cues used in that movie. If anyone cares about such trivia, there's a new book coming out in a few weeks by Tom Weaver that goes into incredible detail about the three Creature movies. It's called "The Creature Chronicles," and I wrote four chapters about the films' music. One chapter on each picture and a fourth on how Universal-International's music department functioned back in the day. I go into a lot of particulars about tracked music vs. original music and things like that.

And for those who are Creaturephiles, there'll be a signing at Dark Delicacies in Burbank on November 8th to celebrate the release of the book and the 60th birthday of the Creature. Many actors and actresses from the Creature movies and other sci-fi films of the 1950s will be there, including Julie Adams, Rex Reason, Coleen Gray, Joyce Meadows, and Kathleen Hughes. Thank you. It was fun doing them, although memorizing all the films and cue names years after I wrote about them required way too much re-research, and I ended up doing the interview with next to no sleep! The chapters I wrote for "The Creature Chronicles" will be similar to my liner notes, only much longer and will be the usual mix of excruciating detail and stupid jokes. Tom Weaver and I collaborated on another book that might be out next year or the year after, called "Universal Terrors." That book covers every one of the 20-odd 1950s sci-fi films the studio made, and I wrote a chapter on the music for each film. A ridiculous amount of trivia that only 100 people in the entire galaxy might care to read!

Wow, see what he did there? TWO of the best segues I've read in a long, long time.

Thank you! Hey, there's so little talk about The Creature and other classic monsters on this site, I can't miss a chance to mention everything I know about the ol' Gill Man. And since there's a new book coming out and we're doing a signing with a lot of 1950s stars, you think I'm going to miss out on a chance for a segue or two? Apparently, the book's main author (Tom Weaver) just got his copies today, although the book's actual official publication date has not arrived yet, I don't believe. If you're into all-things-Creature, here's a link to the discussion:

http://monsterkidclassichorrorforum.yuku.com/topic/51809/CREATURE-CHRONICLES-Tom-WeaverDavid-SchecterSteve-Kronenb?page=17

Did that count as another segue?

Thanks for all your great comments, and especially notice of the above event. Unfortunately I live on the East Coast, so I won't be able to attend, but because of your notice I was able to order a copy of the book from Dark Delicacies. I look forward to reading your contribution as well as the other Creature trivia.

I'm pretty sure Danny Elfman's Batman theme is heard in The Wolfman too (and in a few other earlier film scores). But as Tom Servo said, presentation is everything; hitting on the same pattern of notes is common. Morricone's Man with the Harmonica theme from Once Upon A Time in the West is basically the same as Goldsmith's theme from Coma, but you would never associate the two because their effect and presentation is completely different.

I don't know who the other 99 guys are, Dave, but I'm betting that, supplementing Tom's usual superb job, your music chapters will be worth the price of admission.

I do live here in L.A., but I'll be on the east coast when the big event takes place. Sorry I'll have to miss it, but I'm sure a great time will be had by all. and I've got the book on pre-order at Amazon.

Mazeltov!

I noticed back in the 70s Dave.

In the 70s, when Stanley Black recorded his "Devil" LP, Christopher Palmer mentioned this in his LP notes. Others have mentioned it too over the years. A great Waxman score to be sure!

Thanks for the kind words, Preston. My box of books just arrived via UPS, but I'm too busy to open them right now. Here's hoping all the pages are on the right pages!

Isn't the JAWS theme -- and any variations thereof throughout film history -- basically a riff on Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring"?
