He sort of Talked Sang it, but it was so great. What a voice! They chose to cut if from the Film Version that Alfred Newman music supervised and conducted. This photo at the youtube clip of the song, I guess is from a Broadway Camelot Read Thru or Sing Thru. Pretty cool. What a cast! Richard Burton as Arthur, Julie Andrews as Geneviere, Robert Goulet as Lancelot and Roddy as Mordred! Roddy and Burton would later star in CLEOPATRA together. Others were slowed down, such as "The Merry Month of May," or made deadly serious, such as "What Do the Simple Folk Do?" David Hemmings, well cast in the movie, has only one sly musical flourish, when, after his introduction to his supposed father, Arthur, leaps up on the throne, with his legs over one of the arms. And that's that for him musically. (Wonder if they ever even considered him doing the song for the movie, let alone if it was recorded. Would love a full set of the tracks to that movie, with all the background score, let alone alternates and deleted songs.) Mr. McDowall , by the way, was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in CLEOPATRA.    Posted:   Jul 26, 2014 - 12:11 AM     By:   Zooba   (Member) The seemingly now HARD TO FIND Special Edition DVD of the movie of CAMELOT has a wonderful Isolated Score Track with all of Alfred Newman's great incidental music and great performance of the score. McDowell was NOT nominated for Cleo but should have been    Posted:   Jul 26, 2014 - 5:58 AM     By:   Zooba   (Member) Here's what IMDB says happened concerning the CLEOPATRA Oscar deal with Roddy: A clerical error on the part of 20th Century-Fox cost McDowall a likely Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for his role as Caesar Augustus Octavian in Cleopatra (1963). The studio erroneously listed him as a leading player rather than a supporting one. When Fox asked the Academy to correct the error, it refused, saying the ballots already were at the printer. Fox then published an open letter in the trade papers, apologizing to McDowall: "We feel that it is important that the industry realize that your electric performance as Octavian in 'Cleopatra,' which was unanimously singled out by the critics as one of the best supporting performances by an actor this year, is not eligible for an Academy Award nomination in that category . . . due to a regrettable error on the part of 20th Century-Fox.".    Posted:   Jul 26, 2014 - 6:35 AM     By:   jeff1   (Member) From memory, that DVD isolated score also omits the vocal performances during the songs, making it all the more interesting (I never cared for most of them in the film - Harris was far better in the 1980s London stage revivals). I think Camelot and South Pacific contain some of Newman's most interesting work.
