This is so sad and so frustrating to hear. This is one score my children have asked me to share with them. I introduced them to this film and Return to Oz when they were young. They fell in love with Dark Crystal but not the latter. They listened to my La-La Land release but I am sure would love an expanded version. Sounds like he is holding them hostage with no ransom deal in sight.
How beautiful to hear that your children are actually asking you to share the Dark Crystal album with them. I'm 39 now and like most of my demographic who are not yet fathers are feeling the proverbial "baby fever". How wwonderful that must be that your children enjoy a passion few know or care about.
I have the Numorrean release. Gotta say that the original album was one of the few I can think of that works so much better that the full score as heard in the film.
I recentely did a custom album mix for myself that added a few tracks from the Film Version (Disc Two) and honestly only a few of those really stand out. Downbeat (under Universal Logo) into the opening credits, the short cue as Jen enters Ugra's observatory (which sounds very clean IMHO) and one other later in the CD.
Most of the full film score is moidy, atonal and atmospheric, so depending on personal taste the full presentation is either beloved or eh?
That being said, i have fond memories of buying the album in 82 when i was only 7 and was one of the 10 or so albums that could get me to go to sleep when no medicine or therapy in the world could do any better. LOL

Doesn't Disney own all the Henson Stuff now? (or maybe just the Muppets?) Wouldnt Jones's holding the tapes be harboring stolen property? I'm surprised Disney, in all its infinate power doesnt send their Men In Black and pluck it out of his hands. Even with no intention to use it? Just to show him who is god.
Rights are complicated, but I believe that "The Dark Crystal" is owned by the Jim Henson Company, which is currently owned by the surviving Henson children. Only the Muppets (and not the "Sesame Street" Muppets) are owned by Disney.
In any event, even a lawsuit-happy company like Disney has limits. They may sue a pre-school to take down a playground painting of Mickey Mouse, but that's to protect their copyright on their most valuable assets. A soundtrack release of a score for a cult film, even if they owned it, would quite possibly not be worth their legal costs unless they feared allowing a dangerous precedent.

This is one of the cases where I point at an album reconceptualizing of a score as being definitely superior to the complete score. That said, there are several moments that are extremely arresting that didn't make the album. A few years ago, I sweetened some of those cues from the Numenorean Music edition in order to get them to better match the La-La Land presentation and inserted them into the LP structure.

So maybe we finally get 2cd release of wonderful "Dark Crystal" score ?
Complete film score from master tapes without film edits and also album program...
It will be great... maybe Intrada or LLL for Black Friday?
