I've read these biographies: directors Cukor, Ford, Lubitsch, Wilder, Kazan, Hitchcock, Renoir, Lean, Allen, Chaplin, Welles, Minnelli and (producer) Goldwyn. The standout was the biography of Wilder, "On Sunset Boulevarde; the Life and Times of Billy Wilder" Ed Sikoff. Wilder is my favourite director so it was easy to love reading his biography.

The Ford biography by Joseph McBride was intelligent, perceptive, detailed and objective. Naremore's bio of Minnelli was heavy reading - academically orientated and syntactically dense.

I've read biographies of actors Garbo, Olivier, Cagney and Gable - the latter a gossip-fest of unpalatable anecdotes which I regretted buying and reading.

What are your biographical experiences as they relate to film?
