Thought I'd put in a word about Horner here, since this is "my" thread.

Horner rose to prominence just as I got into high school with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I listened to some of it yesterday as a memorial to this fine composer.

I really thought, at the time, that it was utterly unexpected and amazing that there was a new, young composer with the chops of a John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith. "Enterprise Clears Moorings" was worthy of just about any Golden Age composer.

I loved the fact that Horner had to compose a new piece of celebratory fanfare for an Enterprise launch that was re-used from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and equaled Goldsmith on some fans' quality meters.

It was even more astounding that his scores actually improved over the next couple of years, with Krull, Brainstorm, and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. For some reason, though, I lost touch with Horner's scores after that. Not for quality reasons, I'm sure. I think I was just less attracted by his subsequent films.

All in all, a great loss to movies and scoring. I'll remain a fan for life.

do you think this soundtrack can be reedited ?

Do you mean reissued?

Possibly. But it should be remembered that the La-La Land was the fourth CD release of this score, and the second of the complete score. So a lot of copies of this score are out there, it may be a tough sell to one of our industrious labels.

After four releases of Krull, a true complete score has yet to be issued. The Film version of Vella (the first minute, perhaps a late stage rescore, never appeared in any release, is quite stirring) is still unreleased and imho a pretty great piece of music. That, coupled with the high price demands on Ebay warrants a fifth issue. Perhaps this time someone like Intrada can keep in in print like the Trek scores.

I got an e-mail from La-La Land Records this morning announcing the re-re-release of James Horner's score to Krull. Excelsior! This is the finest memorial that James Horner could have possibly received. A re-release of his Brainstorm album by Varese would also be welcome.

Kudos to Mike & Matt. And thanks to Ford A. Thaxton for producing. Ford, did you tell the La-La Land guys I wanted a copy?

I've never seen the movie, nor heard the score. I'm listening to the samples at La-La Land now and am amazed at how much it sounds like Horner's Star Trek scores (not that that's a bad thing).

1983 Brainstorm
1983 Between Friends (TV Movie)

What a busy couple of years that was for Horner!
