I like the new one a lot, but the one that got me into the series was TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA when I was a kid. What about you guys?

I grew up with Godzilla. First on TV, then at the drive-in watching King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962, the year I turned ten years old. So, I've always had a very tender place in my heart for the big guy.
Watching the very latest version a few weeks ago was like going back in time. I loved the affectionate tribute to the older films, and I thought that overall it was a very entertaining picture. So my favorite Godzilla movie is…the new one.

GODZILLA VS. MEGALON comes out on Blu-ray next month along with DESTROY ALL MONSTERS. And then in October I think GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE is being reissued.

Well, my favorite is the Emmerich 'Zilla. Yep. There, I said it. The other Godzilla movies, to me, are ridiculous ( which is part of their appeal ) but I just can't get into them. Now, they were regular fodder for me growing up in the late 60's / early 70's on Saturday TV...but... now, just can't stand 'em razz

"Well, my favorite is the Emmerich 'Zilla."

MikeP, I LOVE that film. But to my way of thinking it isn't truly a "Godzilla" movie. I think Devlin & Emmerich tried too hard to "Americanize" the Big G.
It's a GREAT monster flick, and I always enjoy watching it.
But it just isn't Godzilla...

I get the feeling you haven't seen any of the films from the last thirty years, beginning with Godzilla 1985.

Hard to pick just one, but if forced to sit for the next two hours and watch only one, I’d pick Godzilla vs The Smog Monster (1971 American International Pictures version), mainly because it can't be found anymore.
I thought the Smog Monster (Hedorah) was just a cool creature; sucking and blowing toxic smoke and gas, spewing hydrochloric acid and hocking big green mud loogies. And it could swim and fly and made cool noises!
And there’s a special place in my heart for Manabe’s soundtrack.
Who’s with me?

No, just to tell them they need to watch the last three decades' worth of G-films before they draw the proverbial line. big grin

But, hey, I'm glad you're always checking out my stuff. wink

I have to go with the original film. I haven't seen the 70's films in 30 plus years and only seen bits of the current crop from the 90's on. I don't consider either of the two American films that borrow the namesake, Godzilla as Godzilla films.

Do you think I'm trying to mess with you? Hmm.

Actually, I was attempting to point out that the thread is for posting what our favorite Godzilla movie is. Your comment above was more or less a dig at some other's opinions, which I suppose in your mind that qualifies as some sort of exchange of ideas. Speaking for myself, I would like to see the thread stay on track without turning into the sort of "is too-is not-is too-is not" nonsense that seems so dear to you.

Regardless, in the interest of maintaining the topic, do you actually have a favorite or not?

Like I said above, it's the first 5 for me with #1 standing head and shoulders above all others. But I still have enormous affection for the rest of the original 15 (and about half of the Heisei), which probably has more to do with the scores than anything else.

I've seen the rest of the Millenium series, but I thought that Toho started to get really silly with it again, despite their statements about wanting to keep their G movies "serious". They criticized the 1998, but truthfully, the 1998 wasn't any less silly than what they themselves have done. It seemed a bit hypocritical to me.

Do you think I'm trying to mess with you? Hmm.

I was flat-out poking fun at what you said back in the Godzilla thread in General Discussion a while back. And that's where you should have had the sense to let it go.

Actually, I was attempting to point out that the thread is for posting what our favorite Godzilla movie is.

Then say exactly that. Because you're the one that took a dig at my post. See how that works?

Your comment above was more or less a dig at some other's opinions

No...it wasn't. I said "I get the feeling that..." I didn't say "You suck because you haven't seen vs. Biollante/Destoroyah," etc.

Your skin is so thin, I can hold a newspaper behind your wrist and still be able to read the text. Suck it up and don't let everything get to you.
