I checked out five of the six Demy movies from the new Criterion set at the library today. (It will be a little while before I can afford this expensive package.) Not surprisingly the one that I'm still on a waiting list for is "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg," the most well-known of his films.
Bay of Angels and Une chambre en ville will be first-time viewings for me, the others I've seen before. (Just got done watching the charming Lola and will be immersing myself in the color-saturated Donkey Skin later tonight.)
Wonderful Michel Legrand scores - I'm looking forward to hearing his music for Bay... for the first time. I'm also intrigued in experiencing Michel Colombier's "rich, operatic score" (as described on the container) for Chambre.
I hope there are other Demy fans here to offer some comments. Has anyone ever seen his Parking (not included in this set)? How does it compare to Demy's earlier musicals?
Well Umbrellas of Cherbough-64- will always be one of my favorite love stories of all time. Enjoyed the Young girls of Rochfort-66-but not as much as the first. However both films had fine music. I saw DONKEY SKIN a few years back and did enjoy it , unique indeed.
