On my Firefox/Google homepage, "Astromenda" malware appears in the search box. I have removed it from my pc programs and have run repeated Malwarebyte and Avast scans which don't detect anything. Any suggestions on how to remove the Astromenda?

Are you comfortable going and picking through your registry? If so, this will probably do it. If you want directions, post back here.
By the way, you probably got it when you downloaded new software recently. Try uninstalling anything you've gotten recently and reinstall with the custom option. This allows you to install the bare bones of what you want. Just another thought.
Often viruss are more difficult to remove than simply running a program. I suggest going to a forum with experts, like the forums at BleepingComputer.com, and folow the instructions and then guides users will give.
It is suggested that you remove astromenda.com manually. You can watch this video from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9np4a-n8l0. It shows you how to get rid of astromenda from IE, Chrome and Firefox. Hopefully I can help you.
You absolutely have my sympathies... been there, suffered them. You are extolled to do more on your computer, and then you are suddenly completely deprived of that capacity. Sucks.
My first scans got rid of the Astromenda, but my search engines still included it which led me to believe it was still in my pc. An IT expert told me to manually remove Astromenda from the search engine list because the malware itself is gone.
My pc got the Astromenda during an AT&T tech support online testing of my pc because AT&T incorrectly told me my DSL was at the wrong speed.
