I remember a line from Raiders in which Belloq likens Indy to himself, by suggesting only a small nudge would be necessary to push him over to Belloq's way of doing things. This seemed to be an oblique reference to the Star Wars concept of the Force, with it's negative and positve energy being separated by a knife edge. In other words, Belloq is Sith with Indy as Jedi.

In Temple Of Doom, Indy does temporarily go over to the Dark Side, however, his padawan learner brings him back from the brink out of a sense of love/devotion.

The big difference being is that you want Indy to come back to the good side. With Mannequin Skywalker, I just thought he was a spoiled brat who deserved to have his legs cut off and his skin burned off.

He was a little shit that's for sure.

It's interesting that usually on FSM therre are very polarised views when someone comes out with a hugely pro or hugely negative comment about a film - James Bond, Crystal Skull etc.

But here not one person seems to have a single good thing to say about the prequels.

I've stated it before in other threads that I am a fan of the prequels. I'm an old school STAR WARS fan who saw the original trilogy in the theater. Over the years of the prequel films, the "Clone Wars" TV series and various novels and comic books, I have really come to enjoy this era of the saga more than the original era. I love the pre-Rebellion era, the slow dissolution of the Senate, the creeping of a democracy towards tyranny, the characters, the stories, the action, the planets and the mythological and philosophical underpinnings of the new movies. I would recommend to any one interested that they read "The Star Wars Heresies", from McFarland Press, by Paul F. McDonald. It covers an amazing amount of ground of examining the new movies and its references to mythology, religion and more.

REVENGE OF THE SITH is my personal favorite, I connected to it on a personal level, but I really enjoy the world-building in Episodes I and II as well. I find it a fascinating study as both Anakin and the Republic are corrupted from within, each being poisoned by lies from Palpatine. I was reading a great deal about Buddhism when the prequels were released and discovered more tenets of this philosophy present here than in the original films. The inability to deal with loss and how it can overtake any one of us as we try to hold on to everything we have is a fascination topic and one that resonated with me personally in terms of Anakin's journey (sudden loss of a parent at 20-21 years old, fear of losing other loved ones such as my wife at the time).

Additionally, I love Ewan McGregor as Obi-want and could pretty much watch him all day in these films. I'm also a fan of his storyline over the course of the series, really loving how we see what he learned from his master, Qui-Gon, how it informed his training of Anakin and then continued to affect him in his later years. For me, it's a rewarding aspect of the prequels as well as the "Clone Wars' TV series.

Just because other members in the FSM echo chamber haven't chimed in with differing viewpoints doesn't mean they don't exist. And there is a huge fanbase for the prequels out there. Some fans in my own age group tend to turn a blind eye to an entire younger generation who have grown up in this new era of STAR WARS and how much it means to them. Just because you didn't connect with it, doesn't mean it can't matter to someone else. And as an aside, I'm an educated 41 year old, who owns his home, has a successful career, is engaged to be married and enjoy an active social life in L.A., so I'm not some shut-in sycophant who simply is a fan of whatever is put in front of me. So make of that what you will.

Tom - a well though out response as to why the prequels have meaning to you.

I can't argue that you like them...

...but for me, the prequels fail spectacularly on every level. Even JW's music doesn't really engage me.

I want to explain as to why I feel that way but it has been...what... 10 years(??) since the prequels and I think the main reasons people are disappointed in them have been repeated ad nauseum.

Simply the story, the acting, the dialogue...are all horrible.

It seems you connected with the film on a level that I think
a) wasn't intended by George Lucas
b) is way more personal than most people in the "don't like" camp did

They are films that left fans polarised - that much is certain.

Hopefully the expansion of the Universe in Disney's hands brings back some of the magic that was sorely missed in the prequels.

Christ almighty it's been about 10 years since the last of these was released and you are all still carrying on like Harry Knowles after too much chocolate.

FFS let it go. Otherwise Mike will start in on KOTCS again.......

Don't worry Clark, after several sessions my hypnotherapist has successfully convinced my that KOTCS was just a bad dream brought about by eating out-of-date Dorritos. I now know there isn't actually a 4th Indy movie!

Now if the therapist can exorcise all memories of the terrible terrible Star Wars prequels from my mind, I may be able to finally lose the straight jacket and padded cell.

While I was ultimately disappointed by the prequel trilogy and largely choose to ignore it now (I agree with all the 'ouch' points mentioned and I prefer my own imagined version of events), I have to say The Phantom Menace has the best lightsabre battle/duel out of all SIX films (Maul vs Jedi...just brilliantly shot/edited/scored sequences). I also really like JW music during Anakin's Farewell to his mum and the Pod Race is pretty cool too.
Clones is the worst one for me, but as it gave us Across the Stars Love Theme, even that has some (musical) merit.
I like some parts of Sith (the darker moments and Anakin's burning scene - again, powerful scoring from JW) but really hate parts too (all those mentioned by others). The Frankenstein/Vader moment is awful and Padme giving birth, quickly naming them, then dropping dead is beyond woeful.
Again, any film that gives me a theme like Battle of the Heroes is also given some leeway.
So, yeah but no.

'The Phantom's a Mess', 'Attack Of The Clownes' and 'Revenge Of The Shit' are all very bad movies.

Revenge of the Shit? The all-anal final chapter!? (Zack and Miri Make a Porno, anyone?)

George Lucas was his own worst director with these.
He was in love with his own creation too much.
Had he hired someone else they would have cut it down to something entertaining.

It's still the best of the prequels.

Perhaps, but that's not actually an accomplishment.

Kev echos my sentiments.

I actually found Episode I to be the best written in a lot of ways (you can easily summarize what the plot is about) and had the best pacing. Episode II was a ghastly mess of things that - I kid you not - seemed to be lined up to make fans happy (I honestly don't think Lucas cared much about Boba Fett up until the backlash of Episode I... and then he had to bait the fans back SOMEHOW) and Episode III is a mix of the two. It has some very strong points to it that are lost in the clutter. The idea that Anakin was just a childish dickhead makes perfect sense - I just wish Lucas had given Christenson more to work with. (Then again, Ian McDiarmid had some awful lines and he came through them smelling like a rose.)

All in all, I'd rate the prequels about as good and bad as the Harry Potter film series: a lot of well-meaning noise and bluster that shouldn't mean anything to you if you're over the age of ten.

These things I found to be good in the prequels:

- Ian McDiarmid
- Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan
- the musical scores
- Coruscant and it's design
- a sense that the SW universe is a living, breathing place
- some individual scenes, mostly in ROTS

But overall, they're all terrible.

Maybe 25 to 35 minutes of worthwhile material in a total running time of over 6,5 hours.

Is that the length of time that Natalie Portman was running around in that white jumpsuit thing in Attack of the Clones? Because that is about the only thing I'd re-watch the prequels for now.

I remember when it came out there were lots of critics that gave it a good review saying Lucas had found the right balance and so forth and I foolishly went to the theater expecting a good movie. General Grievious was the biggest letdown for me. he was so menacing and badass in the animated show, yet in the movie he was a always running away and got a crappy death

it is entertaining when viewed as a comedy though. I mean that Windu versus Palpatine scene was hilarious. the "No he's the traitor ah" line from Jackson is so bad it's funny.

and one positive for the prequels other than the music is the incredible sound work. the pod racing scene still sounds incredible

And there came forth a mighty groan from Skywalker Ranch.

It must break poor George's heart to hear harsh words pouring out after he created such a grand and lavish vision of what was once only a distant idea - The Old Republic.
