Excellent sound quality and a fine Mockridge score. Always liked the main title especially. Donovan's Reef is a lot of fun. Great CD cover! "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" has always been a film favorite -- and a score holy grail. I felt like I could hum along with most of it because I knew both scores so well. I pulled out my BRAVADOS CD for a compare. Yes, they are very similar for the first couple of phrases, although they are NOT note-for-note the same (except for the rhythm) and Bruce is right, after the beginning they are not the same at all. Also have to agree with Bruce that DONOVAN'S REEF is unfairly criticized. It's not among Ford's 'great" films, but it's a lot of fun and boasts great performances (Hollywood style). It's beautifully photographed and among the several themes of the film, one is "some folks just know how to live". One of my favorite throw-away bits in the film happens right after Wayne takes Elizabeth Allen water-skiing. After jetting around for a while, they argue and she swims ashore. Instantaneously, as soon as she hits the waterline at the beach, a Hawaiian child runs from the right side of the screen, hands her a towel, and runs off to the left with hardly a pause. Ah! I see it's written by Noble/Beecher, so I thought it might be a bonus track because it was a pre-existing recording not conducted by Talbot. So I watched it again last night. John Ford is my favorite director. But now I remember why I haven't watched this film in over 40 years. It is the most boring film I've ever seen. I could barely stay awake. It seems like no one knew what to do. Nothing really happens. Nice photography and music, little else. John Wayne is a big goof ball and looks old enough to be Ms. Allen's father or even grandfather. That small boy is an obnoxious little brat. Colorful actors like Mike Mazurki and Cesar Romero are totally wasted. Lee Marvin is given nothing to do etc. etc. The film was supposed to have some serious comments about racism, treating people kindly etc., yet I see tough guy Wayne spanking women and throwing them out of windows, that is in between drunken brawls. This was an easy paycheck for all involved. It should be called John Ford and friends take an Hawaiian vacation. It's hard for me to believe John Ford directed this disaster. It's easy to see Ford was near retirement and Wayne should have joined him. Oh well, guess the film just rubs me the wrong way. I always liked Liberty Valance, both film and score. Can't say the same for Donovan's Reef as a film, the music is pleasant enough. LIBERTY VALANCE has a very rousing and exciting Main Title which does not reflect the introspective mood of the movie because -- cleverly enough -- it actually "prints the legend" in music. But it doesn't sound like Frere Jacques.
