Of all the changes Lucas made to the first three movies, this is the one I consider a solid improvement.

One thing missing from the IV, V, & VI upon their original release was a certain lack of scope. We heard about the Empire, but only saw glimpses of the outskirts and far-flung outposts. The new coda of Jedi with people around the center of the Empire pulling down statues and such gave me a better sense of living under the Emperor.

I think it also made sense to change the music for that. No longer is it just the Ewoks and our heroes celebrating, but so many newly freed people. Hence, new music to illustrate the many different peoples celebrating.

That said, I like 'Ewok Celebration'. I think it has a little more character.

I pretty much agree 100%.

Wouldn't have been interesting if the SE celebration music was used a major theme in the prequels? It would have tied things together so nicely.

What about Sebastian Shaw's Anakin Skywalker being replaced by Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker in the SE?
I was very unhappy with the loss of the Ewok Celebration.

That was silly if they weren't going to put Ewan Macgregor (sp) in for Obi Wan.

I am just glad to hear Darth Vader (and James Earl Jones !!!!!!) will be returning.

But he's dead. Cremated. A young hipster goodie two shoe spirit now.

Sebastian Shaw wasn't replaced until the DVDs in '04. In the original theatrical SE's from '97, Shaw was still there. Lucas just kept ruining the movies more and more everytime he tinkered with them.

And I am in the minority, as I really never liked Jedi's new ending. It felt like a gimmick to tie the original movies to the prequels by throwing in Naboo and Coruscant in there...two planets that we never saw in the originals. I do realize the SE releases in themselves were a gimmick to help promote new SFX and the upcoming release of TPM. Plus, the new ending just lacked a warmth and feel good emotion that the original ending had. Yes, the original ending was a tad corny. But it worked. It was neat to see the new ending when it came out in '97...but over time I feel like it was unnecessary. Much like the prequels, it felt like Lucas force-fed us so many scenes instead of leaving it up to our imaginations. We know the galaxy was probably celebrating. But we didn't have to see it.

I was initially momentarily confused by the gruesome threesome popping up first this way and then that way, however, the massaging of the images was highly suggestive of prequel material heading our way sometime soon. I didn't dwell on it too much. It was obvious the scenery had been injected in the SEs to add a greater sense of scale to the SW universe which, hitherto, had remained under the carpet.

The downing of the statue of Palpatine, though, was a bit close to the mark. The reality is that if you obliterate one evil you'd better make sure you don't inadvertantly replace it with an even bigger one. So that scene from Coruscant has proven to be dated.

Naboo was not in the 97 SE either.

Yep, you are right. I forgot they didn't add the Jedi Temple, The Senate chambers or Naboo until the '04 DVDs. The DVD changes were even more jarring with Hayden replacing Sebastian and Temura's voice being used for Boba Fett. They really were trying to tie a lot of it to the newly released prequels.

I absolutely hated the redone original trio for all its bad and unnecessary CGI. What irritates me almost the most is the end music from "Return of the Jedi" that horrible Ewok redone rubbish. Music that at best would be fit for a coffe commercial. It was like hearing someone fart a national anthem. Where the original had music that was in line with the fantastic Ewok march music, this new addition had all the class of 90s etnokitsch, and was all the more proof that the whole SE-thing was a 90s verion of a kick starter program to get the useless and awful prequels made. Bad all over but AAAAAARGGGH that neo-etno-Ewok was the worst.

LOL. You're thinking Nescafé, aren't you Stu?

P.S. Do you recognize the name of the arranger?

YES YES YES. That is exactly what I meant, THANK YOU. I always hated that song because I dislike that kind of music but also because I always really HATE cinema commercials, and that one I remember the most. The song served its purpose, and it may be my tastes and preferences but between those two and this song there was little love.
I don't know the arranger and no offense intended to him but man does that commercial stick and man does that refurbished Ewok rubbish remind me of it.

Thanks once again for picking up correctly on what I tried to convey.

Next time you're at Albert Heijn and pick up a bottle of La Tulipa remember that it is produced by the arranger of the Nescafé tune. Hope I didn't ruined that for you ;-)

To the others: sorry about this offshoot. Back to Star Wars!

...the "skinny" is that there was no clean end credits available from Jedi, only the album master with the "Ewok Celebration" overlap, so on the S/E release the first six bars of the "End Title" come from Empire.

Mike

Mike, I've done a number of Empire/Jedi end title comparisons from the Sony soundtrack albums, and I notice that the six bars of the "joint" end titles run through the trumpet cadence that begins the Rebel Fanfare.

The mastering individual--more likely a "team", I would say--managed to punch up the Empire end title bars repeated in Jedi to make it sound like a completely new fanfare/theme statement by the trombones and trumpets.

I suspect, though, that the trumpet arpeggio/cadence that immediately follows the trombone theme statement and begins the Rebel Fanfare might be a newly recorded "sweetener". Am I way off-base here, Mike?

Whatever the case, the Jedi end title beginning sounds fantastic. Kudos to you, Mike, and whoever you bequeathed the assembly to.

Holy cow. I had forgotten how terrible the new ending (music and visuals) is. I'm going to go back to putting my head in the sand denying these monstrosities ever existed.

I didn't realize when I made this inquiry to Mike Matessino that I was inadvertantly sticking my toe in the tarpit of fanboy animosity.

Let me reiterate. I don't care about anyone's stance on the re-imagined "Victory Celebration" sequence. I started this thread about the "End Title" differences between the original Jedi soundtrack/movie and the current RCA Victor/Sony edit of the soundtrack.

oh come on. Nescafe was funny. And totally on the money.

Also, it's hard to know when a thread is intended solely for the poster or when it's open to public discussion, riffing off each other. (Not that anyone needs to hear ANOTHER negative comment about Lucas' prequel aesthetic...)
