MONDAY, AUGUST 11 WEST SIDE STORY---Steven Spielberg commented on rumors that he will direct a remake of the classic movie/Broadway musical, "Well you know something, WEST SIDE STORY is one of my favorite Broadway musicals and one of the greatest pieces of musical literature, my goodness, one of the greatest scores and some of the greatest lyrics ever written for a musical so just let me put it this way: it’s on my mind." Spielberg also said there will be a few changes his THE BFG movie based on the children's book: it will be set in a boarding school instead of an orphanage and new characters include two scientists who debate the existence of giants, and Sophie will have a new best friend. SPOTLIGHT---movie underway starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber, Rachel McAdams, Aaron Eckhart and Stanley Tucci in which BOSTON GLOBE reporters investigate Cardinal Bernard Law who protected priests guilty of pedophilia by transferring them to other parishes where they continued their sexual attacks. WESTWORLD---James Marsden (X-MEN) will co-star in the HBO tv remake of the 1973 Michael Crichton movie. Marsden's role is "a mysterious new arrival to a small frontier town. He quickly proves both his charm - and his talent with a revolver. His pursuit of a local beauty launches him on a dark odyssey." Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood and Jeffrey Wright also star. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD---George Miller said he originally wanted Mel Gibson to return for the fourth movie in the series, but chose Tom Hardy because of age, not Gibson's scandals, "I have a great affection for Mel. I was really heartbroken to see him go into (the scandals). But it's a new time. I hope Mel gets to act in more movies because I think he's a wonderful actor. But I think he's an amazingly good director...we found ourselves having written two other screenplays. One of them is completed. The other one is in the form of a kind of unedited novel. So by the time we got there, we realized we've got a couple more Mad Max stories to tell, and that ...required us to cast someone who was younger." THE FOUNDATION---20th Century Fox movie underway based on the comic book in which a secret team of specialists belonging to a foundation created by Nostradamus seek to prevent the catastrophes that he saw in his prophecies. The script is by Evan Daugherty (TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES). TRUE DETECTIVE---Elisabeth Moss (MAD MEN) denied reports she co-starring in Season 2, "I know nothing. I know literally as much as you know. The rumors hit me... I had to ask my own people, 'Have you not told me something?' For me as an actor who's been in this business for over 25 years, it's so flattering to be associated with that show..." SOUTHPAW---Naomie Harris (SKYFALL) will co-star as a social worker with Jake Gyllenhaal in this movie about a boxing champ who is losing in his personal life. The script is by Kurt Sutter (SONS OF ANARCHY). THE FOLLOWING---Zuleikha Robinson (HOMELAND, LOST) will join the cast as FBI Agent Ryan Hardy's new doctor girlfriend. CHRISTMAS EVE---Lizzy Caplan (MASTERS OF SEX) will co-star in this untitled comedy movie about three childhood friends who are in New York for their annual Christmas reunion. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie also star. THE FLASH---Clancy Brown will have a recurring role as Gen. Wade Eiling. ASSASSIN'S CREED---Michael Fassbender commented on the movie based on the video game, "You know, we absolutely want to respect the game. There's so much cool stuff in the game that we're actually spoiled for choice in terms of what we can use and what we can't, but we also want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own version of things that already exist in the game...we're approaching it as a feature film, as opposed to approaching it as a video game...when I met up with the guys from Ubisoft and they started to explain this whole world and the idea of DNA memory...I think it's a very feasible scientific theory." ROADRUNNER--comedy action movie underway starring Scott Eastwood, son of Clint Eastwood, and Trace Adkins.

He should be looking at "Candide" if he wants to film an unfilmed Bernstein musical. Unfortunately, the ideal "Dr. Pangloss" just died at 63.

Really, "The Rothschilds" is the musical that would be right up his alley. The original Broadway production had book trouble, but the original writer took another crack at it for a recent revival and straightened it out a bit.
