Just my opinion: Of all the "lesser" Goldsmith scores that get issued and re-issued and expanded, what a shame that this great score has lost tapes. Still, the existing album is first-rate.

“Adding to Under Fire’s prestige is the fact that the album, produced by Goldsmith with longtime recording engineer Bruce Botnick, was specially devised to showcase the score as a musical work unto itself. Goldsmith wrote two standalone selections for the record (tracks 1 and 7) and after completing the recording sessions in London decided to record additional overlays and linking material in Los Angeles. The record came out so well that many of the album mixes were retroactively dubbed into the film itself.”

'Lesser' I guess in the popularity of its film? It's easily one of my favorite Goldsmiths.
I thought the poster meant that many "lesser" films ("less" than UNDER FIRE) get issued and re-issued.
As far as UNDER FIRE is concerned, the movie is very good, it's more in vein of the 1970s political thrillers and "serious" movies, and not so much with the more comic book style actioners that became more prominent in the 1980s. UNDER FIRE can stand alongside films directors such as Costa Garvas or Alan J. Pakula had done just a few years prior.
UNDER FIRE at the time had very good reviews, and I remember one article by a very respected journalist from 1982 who said it was one of his favorite movies.
It always struck me as somewhat strange that the UNDER FIRE soundtrack album (which was not really a re-recording as far as I know, but was re-worked for listening arrangement and had newly written pieces, much like FIERCE CREATURES), was such a high-profile undertaking, featuring respected jazz guitarist Pat Metheny, yet it was so scarcely available. I do have the original WB LP, but for the longest time (before FSM), it was only available as a Japanese import CD (which I also have).

There is no doubt that UNDER FIRE would be an attractive title for any boutique label to offer, either just a straight re-issue of the existing album (though the FSM was available for a long time, I suppose most collectors interested have that score), or especially as an expansion with all the original film tracks, including the "Main Title" (which is the most obvious piece of music missing). A complete UNDER FIRE would be among the better selling soundtrack releases, so I suppose the only reason it hasn't happened so far is the lack of master tapes.

Considering the fact this score/album has bona fide career zeniths from Mr. Goldsmith, I think it is beyond doubt that there will be an eventual reconstitution from existing sources.
The keepers of the Jerry Goldsmith flame who harbor production skills will not leave this one without a high-resolution master for posterity.
