I just noticed that Kritzerland's release of RISING SUN is still available:

http://kritzerland.com/rising_sun.htm

That's both a pity and a blessing. I'm glad that it still is for those who have somehow missed it, but this is really a score that should be getting a lot more attention. So many lesser scores have sold far more copies in much shorter time. This was a highlight release last year for me.

Viewing the films Takemitsu scored yields the most light onto Takemitsu's output, much of which is not on soundtracks.

I'll put forth my favorite films in a following ranking (and also spotlight some of my favorite concert works by TT).

I have "I Hear the Water Dreaming", but haven't decided which version is my favorite (I got tired listening to all the difference ensembles.)

I heard two others performed on BBC radio recently that I liked: Green, and Ceremonial - An Autumn Ode.

One columnist called him the greatest film composer to have lived, based on the incredible array of styles in which he wrote.

Maybe the greatest film composer. Certainly the only prolific one to be welcomed into the international classical and concert repertory, where he's actually more well known. I have the two massive Complete Edition Film Music boxsets from Japan containing all of his scores. They're among my most treasured possessions. And the Rising Sun expanded release is a revelation.

Could you recommend a performance of Flock Descends TR?

It's been a few years since I saw The Sand Girl, taking it in as a whole, so I can't say I noticed Tohru's music.

Mirai Eno Isan (TV doc) 1974-1975 Legacy Of The Future ? 3/22/1974 - 10/30/1975

is a great album

and still available from AMAZON under a different name namely: Treasures for The future.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00005FIFS/ref=pe_385721_37038051_TE_3p_dp_1

One particulair piece of music of this album is very well known, because it was used for the PBS television series COSMOS from Carl Sagan.

This piece is called: the heart of the universe.

I only bought the album recently but i realy like it very much.

Although I've owned the recording for 5 months now, it's only from reading this thread title that I've clicked that the composer is also a film music composer!

November Steps: For orchestra with shakuhachi and biwa [Yokoyama,Katsuya/ Tsuruta,Kinshi/Haitink,Bernard/RCO/1969][live]

First play: I was entranced, but two subsequent plays have not had the same magic.

I enjoyed his music in Rising Sun, especially the office concert sequence but have not sought to get the score - yet!

I know it is expensive and hard to get, but actually almost all of his film music is available. It is on Parts 3 and 4 of the Complete Takemitsu Edition. Also, the Film Music of Toru Takemitsu box set has most of his major works on 7 CDs.

Yes, the one I like most is on the BIS label. BIS issued that CD a matter of months after Takemitsu's passing in 1996.

Marin Alsop's rendition of "A Flock Descends..." on the Naxos label is also first rate. That disc makes a very fine intro for new listeners as well -- it's very cheap and almost all the performances on it are among the best.

Hi, Mr Drive.

Do you own any of these sets yourself?

I'm aware of the Victor LP volumes and the JVC CD editions, but never had encountered any them for sale much less an opportunity to buy any of them.

Regarding some of my favorite Takemitsu film music, my preference would be for individual albums and not compilations. SEPPUKU, for example, is 2.5 minutes on the Nonesuch compilation and about only 16 minutes on the JVC.

I don't see PALE FLOWER (KAWAITA HANA) in soundtrackcollector.com. Do any of these collections have that one?

The 1962 PITFALL is only on one comp CD @ around 11 minutes. Surely there is more music than that in the film?

The Complete Takemitsu Edition: Music for Movies 1 has about 15 minutes of Pale Flower.

I haven't seen Pitfall, but most of the films in these collections are represented by maybe 10-15 minutes of music each, so I think there are more suites for each film, rather than an attempt to release every note. In fact, based on the run times it looks like the suites on the JVC sets could be the content as what was released in the Complete Takemitsu box sets, but I only have the Music for Movies 1 box, so I don't have a way to compare them.

As far as individual albums go, I really like the concert recording of Ai no Borei. It was released on CD as a Tower Records exclusive, so I'm not sure how hard it is to come by nowadays.

I don't, but a friend of mine has the Complete Edition. He paid an insane amount of money for it, but it was certainly worth it!

I believe this set is mostly complete. A few titles from his filmo are missing, but the films may be lost. Since they even included music+fx tracks for some, I believe they tried to get everything on it that they could. Rising Sun has less that the Kritzerland, I think it is the same as the old album. That may have been a rights issue though.

SEPPUKU may very well not have more than 16 minutes. On this set, it is in 15 cues, some as short as 17 seconds. Remember, many of the nuberu bagu films are very sparsely spottet. I A/B'ed some with the movies and these were certainly complete.

Yes, I have forgotten where I saw this name, I think it's closer to a literal translation. The release I've seen is Criterion.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I can't find a publication of Takamitsu's Woman In The Dunes. Maybe one day.
