Classy cast in high-octane Southern action picture gets punchy rock-based Southern soundtrack by Christopher Young & Kostas Christides to match!

Classy cast in high-octane Southern action picture gets punchy rock-based Southern soundtrack by Christopher Young & Kostas Christides to match! Barry Battles calls tale a "Southern Whup-Ass Extravaganza", directs Billy Bob Thornton, Eva Longoria, Andre Braugher in action at breakneck speed. Young & Christides create cues both high-powered, flavorful. When called for, melodies take front and center. Moments of tenderness have their say as well. But no matter where composers take score, guitars, bass, drums & piano underline everything with crisp, twangy authenticity. Striking, unusual score from horror music veterans! As customary for composer Young, CD features cues carefully re-worked and assembled for maximum listening pleasure. Christopher Young on piano, Tom Rotella, Andy Abad, Nick Stoubis on guitars, Karl Vincent on bass, M.B. Gordy on drums & percussion. A genuine thrill-ride, country style! Intrada MAF series CD.

Not a fan of that southern fried hillbilly, nor of the good old boy sound, but we are talking Christopher Young here and the samples sound great, so purchased!

Some bits sound like distant cousins of Ghost Rider, which is no bad thing.

When you whish upon a guitar... (Giacchino docet?)
Excellent and refreshing music, not the usual boring symphonic custom which would be very inappropriate for this sort of movie.

Apologies for the late response to your query. Here are some thoughts I have about ‘The Baytown Outlaws’ CD.

I bought the Blu-ray of the movie a while back as at the time this was the only way to get a listen to the score. The film caught me a bit by surprise and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was very pleased that an album was eventually released knowing that the CD would be an excellent representation from the movie - and more.

The Baytown Outlaws’ CD is a great and exciting listen. It is heavily inventive – which is a calling card of Chris’ compositions I feel. He never sets himself any boundaries and this CD is an example of that. It is heavily rock influenced in a lot of tracks and certainly sits apart from Chris’ big orchestral works – but in a good way! It is evident that Chris and Kostas are having a good time here, pushing the rock score envelope and playing with sonics.

The first track (Baytown Outlaws) lets you know which territory you are in which is a descent in to a gritty and dark place in the world, driven by heavy guitar and drums. The drum and guitar performances are all really cool and are a real stand out.

‘Sugar Plum Scum’ is again guitar driven and a little more intimate adding more to the character of the film.

‘Longorioso’ is softer guitar and is a much intended wink I’m sure at the pretty lady.

‘Brthr Fckr’ is my favorite track which after a slow and purposeful build hits its stride around the two minute mark and then grabs you by the collar! Heavy guitars hit you from all sides and I’m sure Chris himself is providing vocals. Play in a darkened room really loud for best effect!

‘When you wish upon a Guitar’ is back to the more intimate territory to give us a breath after the heavy rock. Lovely melody to make you smile and ponder. Love it.

‘Two Pistol Coffin’ is a dark, heavy, intense rock ‘tour de force’.

‘She is my Shining Island Nympho’ is a fun track. Slightly erotic feeling with a big injection of funky fun.

‘Shellac Eyes’ is a slow piece again giving pause for thought before the direction changes again in ...

‘Ode to Billy Bob’. Military in style, it is a slow build cue for bad guy Billy Bob. A ‘heavy stare’ from a guy who means business...

‘Lay me Down on Cold Ground’ is another favorite track which is gentle and slightly melancholy, taking you on a journey out of yourself for 3 minutes and change.

‘Bob-A-Lo Babe’. This track keeps things bobbing along nicely heading towards the climax of the album.

‘Fandango Mango’. Back to the true heart of the album which is a rock adventure. This track grabs you and doesn't let you go for its 4.27 running time. With some cool sonic play around the 1.38 mark it also makes use of some surreal sounds. It also comes in with some brilliant guitar play from 2.33 on which takes the cue to a new and unexpected level.

‘Searley Insane’ is a fitting conclusion to a pleasantly off-beat score album that is a lot of fun and makes you sit up and take notice. Watch out for the tweeting birds on this cue ... they’re out there...

Listening to this album again, as I have done to write these notes, my love for the album has only increased and will be pushed to the top of my lists for more play in 2015. There is a lot of variety here – and I think something for everyone. Thanks to Intrada for putting this out, and to Mr Young and Mr Christides for the absolute talent on show.

As a side note, I listened to this CD for the first time on the day I heard Chris’ score to ‘The Monkey King’ and it just highlights to me how diverse this expert composer can be. ‘The Monkey King’ is huge and beautiful, majestic and glorious, and is one of my favorite scores from the last 20 years. This composer still delivers on every level.

All the Best for 2015 everybody,
Cheers,
Gareth

The Baytown Outlaws CD won’t be available from Intrada after today. It’s time is up. As I am sure you can tell from reading my above comments I love this score. It is a fantastic listen and a lot of fun, so if you are on the fence, I would jump right in. Christopher Young is always the mark of quality as we all know, and with the added bang for your buck of having co-composer Kostas Christides on board, well I don’t feel you can go wrong! I hope you will give it a whirl if you haven’t already. Time is running out …

Best,
Gareth
