Goldenthal is my favorite composer, by quite a far margin.
I decided to revisit In Dreams, after not listening to it for at least a year or two.
What an amazing score. And an even more challenging album. It's so dissonant and avant garde, but so rewarding if you're willing to go along for the ride.
I love how he always blends unsettling creepy dissonance with a melancholic melody intertwined. And those classic-Goldenthal repeating arpeggio patterns over low brass swells are so iconic. It's just one of those things you hear and instantly say, "That's Goldenthal" and nobody else ever sounds like that.
As creepy and "out there" as the score is, I forgot how much beauty and delicateness there is. "Clair's Nocturne" is his trademark piano patterns, reminding me of Sphere and Alien 3.
Agree 100%, I used to play this a lot, and it does get to you. 'Dream Baby' has to be the best creepy pop song ever written. Amazing album, wish I had more to add than that! - Sean
