The only complaint I've had over Maltin's guide is that the person reviewing the film is not identified. All it would take is the initials giving credit to who wrote what and I never understood why not. Various other print guides like Time Out and Radio Times did this making it fair to the contributors instead of looking like one person did it all.
The "classic" film guide (pre 1960) was a great idea (Maltin's daughter apparently) but some titles cross over and it can get a little confusing as to which guide to use when looking up some titles.
It will be interesting to see if or how he approaches an internet sourced guide.

Many years ago when I first met Leonard, I recommended that he reconsider his book's three-star rating and faint praise -- "Laughton's sole directing effort is quite good" -- for THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, and he agreed to look into it. The very next edition upped the rating to three and a half stars, with a re-written blurb. More recently, when my book on HUNTER was published, he gave it a nice plug at his website. So I'll always be grateful to Leonard, and admiring of his achievements. Who else has ever been nearly as successful at parlaying our childhood love affair with movies into a flourishing career? I've pre-ordered the 2015 GUIDE, and as soon as the new CLASSIC book becomes order-able I'll do the same.

I just visited my local BOOK store to see if the 2015 volume arrived.
I didn't buy it every year but I always had a copy handy.

I'm surprised at some of the negative comments about his reviews because, for me, they are far better and more in tune with my own opinions than most of the other similar guides (Halliwell anyone?) which have come and gone. His guide certainly had staying power... which must mean something.

I met him too. His passion was and is undeniable. Because we were in a video store I challenged him on numerous films he hadn't seen but I'm still sure he could have buried me if he had done the choosing.

Just watching Sopranos series 5 episode 3. The one where steve buscemi Tony B comes out of prison.
Carmela and tony are living apart and Carmela is having the girls over for a film club evening, Rosie aprilia, Janice, and sexy adriana, etc. Theyve chosen Citizen Kane and Carmela says " To give us some background, lets see what Leonard Maltin has to say..." and reads out the Kane blurb.
