Interesting how Martinez chose to contrast the 'old' with the 'new'. His work giving what I feel is cold/clinical and with a sense of horror to the goings on. I suspect Soderbergh was thinking Martinez would be a 'sound' choice.
I feel exactly the opposite. Martinez' music always takes me right out of the scenes of this otherwise excellent series. It just doesn't feel right. Call me old fashioned but I much prefer Korzenioswki's approach to 'Penny Dreadful', great stuff!

The emotion felt when seeing a scalpel cut through flesh. Electrical shock. Heroin use. Clinical, white, sterile, disease presentation. I felt the music served these well, in the most modern of sounds. To me Martinez offers somewhat of a light on the hill for the most modern era of film music directions, I maybe alone in this regard.

I agree in absolutes. Martinez has been a favorite of mine since discovering him on Traffic. I'm glad that Soderbergh introduced us to him with sex, lies, and videotape and I stand firmly by knowing that he is a talent beyond most others.

Nobody listens to me...I didn't say he was a bad composer but one of the best scores of the year...??
Yeah, I think it's one of the best of the year too -- at least in the tv category. Thank God there are composers like Martinez who dare to go against convention and do stuff like this (scoring a period drama with smooth electronic textures and beats). There are many who try to copy him these days, but there's only one Cliff and he's instantly recognizable.
Haha, will do. I know he's not one to 'overscore' a picture but I find his noodlings always rather bland. I know he's well respected in the filmmusic society and he comes accross as a real nice guy who cares but his music is just not for me. That's the reason I'm giving the World Soundtrack Awards a miss this year (for the first time in a very, very long time).
