I've just returned from the Norwegian International Film Festival, but because we produced the festival paper, there wasn't time for that much film viewing.
One of the few I did see, however, was Luc Besson's LUCY.
Man, what a fantastic film! I was actually moved by it -- not so much the story per se, but to see one of my old director favourites return to form so magnificently. In my opinon, this is on the same level as his 80's and 90's highlights (SUBWAY, ATLANTIS, BIG BLUE, LEON, NIKITA and THE FIFTH ELEMENT). All the things that I love about him, and that put him in the socalled 'cinema du look' movement is here -- pulsating audiovisual ideas in blue and red, tight editing, brilliant action, and some interesting crosscuts. And Scarlet Johansson in the middle.
I was so engrossed by the experience that I failed to pay that much attention to Serra's score, but the little I did hear was wonderful. Some modern rhytmical figures, nice melodies and beautiful textures. I can't wait to hear it on album.

I saw LUCY yesterday. I guess I fall somewhere in the middle. The film asks an interesting question--what could we do if we could use our brain at a higher level?--but it doesn't come up with any unique postulates (telekinesis, mind-reading). Johansson certainly shows emotion early in the film--her fear when first captured by the drug gang, her phone call to her mother from the hospital--but as her intellect grows, her emotions recede, as she becomes more computer-like, eventually becoming "the cloud." I am everywhere. The film's action sequences are not special (body levitation, gun battles, a car chase), but are nevertheless well-handled by Besson. He minimizes the use of the "shaky cam" and the editing allows you to follow the action. But as a whole, I certainly don't think LUCY is as stimulating in either its ideas or its staging as, say, INCEPTION. As for the score, I'm not an Eric Serra fan, and this film has just the unmemorable type of score I expect for this genre.

It'ds funny how tastes differ. I thought LUCY was pretty awful. It starts from a flawed premise in the first place (that humans only use 10% of their brains) and goes from there; a terrible screenplay with awful dialogue, stilted performances (especially from Johansson, whose increasing 'lack of emotion' makes no sense), action sequences ripped wholesale from other better movies (The Matrix anyone?), poorly conceived character motivation, and a wholly confusing ending which doesn't seem to know what point it's trying to make.
Oh, well.

Well, it wouldn't be fun if we all felt the same way.
For me, this is the best film of the year (so far). I'll have to postpone a proper evaluation of the score untill I've digested the album.
The film went by very fast which is a good indication of a successful film.
I liked it but would have liked it a lot more without all the violence which seemed gratuitous
as did some of the action scenes (esp. the boring one-way car chase).
Best of all, it is something different and how rare is that these days!!!!

Yikes! I just found out the film was one hour and 28 minutes long; not 128 minutes like i thought!!!!
No wonder it went by so fast.
