I'm not very familiar with Gorky Park. Based on what I've heard online, it sounds VERY close to Horner's Commando and 48 Hours. Is that accurate? Is it more synth based or does it actually utilize the orchestra? I've always loved Horner's stuff, but I'm not a huge fan of his early 80's synth driven scores. Trying to decide if this will be a purchase for me or not...

Well, here is a bit of the score, I happen to quite like it myself.

Enjoy

If the other title is THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT, I thought this might be of some interest:

There are similarities. But I can't stand "Commando" and don't have much patience for "48 HRS," but I happen to really enjoy "Gorky Park." So take that as you will.

Yeah, Gorky Park really does it for me for some reason, despite it sounding like a cousin to 48HRS and the mother/father/sister/brother to Commando.

"One is a straight LP long long overdue on CD, but the masters had long been elusive."

If this is THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT, this means that the film arrangements will not be included. Dang.

But the arrangements that were done for the LP release were just dazzling, so it's a worthy release. Yes!

Basically what this gentleman said and while I'm not as sanguine about 48 HRS and Commando as Babbling Fat Guy, they do have their moments, I much prefer the overall more classical feel of Gorky Park and its eerie and adroit use of the cymbalom.

I had never heard a lick of the Legrand score before. That's very nice.

* use of which reminds me at times of Jerry's use of the instrument in Coma.

Well, you're not the only one who apparently doesn't care for it:

This review from the Nostalgia Critic on "Commando", has three humorous parts about Horner's score:

8:57 in
11:05 in
and 16:55 in

I too dislike 48 HRS and Commando, but think Gorky Park is worthwhile. I'm not quite convinced it's worth a double dip, having got the Kritzerland disk, but if you don't own it and like early Horner, it's definitely worth a consideration.

Chris.

I guess I'm the only Giorgio Moroder & Horner fan...I enjoy Gorky Park, but there is some temp love with 1982's Cat People there which never fails to chuckle me wink

'Irina's Chase' perhaps? I've never seen Cat People, but I'm afraid that if I do it will be the end of my remaining illusions about Horner.

Honestly, as much as i love 'Gorky Park' (and yes, it is a much better score than 48 Hrs. and/or 'Commando', it doesn"t need a re-issue (expanded or not).

There are several other scores from that period who are in need of a release, before i die wink
