Inferno, by a country mile. Love the score.

I remember seeing the film as a youngster and being blown away by the opening titles - great music and wonderful shots of the jet ranger flying over San Francisco. To this day it is one of my all time favourite movie openings.

Yes, definitely TOWERING INFERNO.

That being said, EARTHQUAKE has that gloriously funky cue "Miles on Wheels" which nothing in INFERNO can match. I dig that, and in fact any time Williams tapped into similar territory (CINDERELLA LIBERTY etc.).

THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE I've never cared for at all, although I have a soft spot for the film for several reasons.

What's your personal fave?

Of course loving Williams and most anything he does, I enjoy them both, but think THE TOWERING INFERNO is a much more engaging and enjoyable score. I remember buying them both on LP back in year they were released and playing the grooves off of INFERNO and playing EARTHQUAKE a few times. Although I love certain Tracks on EARTHQUAKE like "The City Sleeps" and those quirky bits like "Something for Rosa"!

Your thoughts please. Better score in your opinion

Ha, interestingly, similar story here. I got both LPs on the same day. I listened to EARTHQUAKE first, then watched the movie (which was -- by pure coincidence -- on TV the very day these LPs arrived in the mail). Next day I listened to TOWERING INFERNO. Back in its day, I liked TOWERING INFERNO clearly more than EARTHQUAKE.

I still think that, overall, THE TOWERING INFERNO is the stronger score as a whole, and "Planting The Charges" is one of the most exciting cues John Williams has written. EARTHQUAKE is nice, and as film music it worked very well. (Good idea to leave the actual earthquake scenes unscored.) But unlike INFERNO, EARTHQUAKE is more or less lacking a musical arc that binds the score together.

Thank you for that. I never tire of those opening shots and, of course, the music is perfect. John Williams has had perhaps the most magnificent career of any film composer, but this will always be my favorite of his scores. Like I said before, I hope beyond hope that someone will release this soundtrack again, even if there is nothing new to add to the FSM release. (Although a 2-disc set with source music, alternate cues, etc., would be very welcome too.)

While not the scintillating "Towering Inferno" Main Title, the "Earthquake" Main Title (original soundtrack still not released and a little different from the re-recorded album version) sets up the Sensory anticipation and musical impression of a busy city about to face catastrophe beautifully with that magnificent Williams gift for fanfare and orchestral drama.

Don't make me choose...

I see them as being very different but both superb in their own way. I like both the more tuneful Earthquake main title AND the driving, bustling Towering Inferno main title. The bodies of the scores are like a good magazine (in the case of EQ) and a good novel (TI), so choosing isn't a necessity.

It might be arbitrary, but I mentally lump The Eiger Sanction score in with these two, although it's a different type of film. It was a fantastic purple patch when I saw the three films at the cinema one after the other bang bang bang (or so it seems in my memory) and made me a huge JW fan even before Jaws made him a household name.

It is possible to enjoy them both as part of an equal and differing and satisfying Williams trilogy of the time with a "Poseidon Adventure" start, a center "Earthquake" and a slam-bang finish with "The Towering Inferno".
