OK, the movie is terrible but the score is really big and full of memorable themes. One of the themes is actually the the first part of the melody of the italian folk song Funiculì, Funiculà.
Since it`s Disney I hope that Intrada will release it in the future.
Thanks for the reminder. I remember the film came out all those years ago, and I said to myself that I should check out the score, even if the film was pants. I tried, but there was only the pop album. So since then, I've forgotten all about it. I'd definitely be up for a score release of this -- composed in Silvestri's heyday!
Did Silvestri ever compose a full version of the Super Mario Bros theme? I really loved the sound of the short rendition they used at the beginning of the film.
Terrific score, makes for a great album....err, I guess it would anyway....
I just recently heard that Hoskins & Leguizamo were so dismayed with the script & production that they showed up on set drunk everyday. I have yet to see the movie but want to now, to see if there is any truth to this.
How do you screw up Mario?? The bits I've seen and the production design looks ridiculous! :-/

Saw it when I was a kid. Years later, it is very much a guilty pleasure. Not sure if it would've worked better had they not used the 'Super Mario' imprimatur.
Despite the lack of variation in his 'Mario Brothers' theme, Silvestri's score is a Holy Grail for me. Would love to have a complete version.
I'd love to see an official release of this score. I love the different themes Silvestri composed and the overall quirky "gothic" sound. Hopefully, the rights being held by Disney, the folks at Intrada will take care of this one someday.
The Super Mario movie production is one of the most interesting reads you're likely to find. It reminded me a lot of the story of Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck - who were tapped to pen Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom and later wrote and directed Howard The Duck - where they were suppose to be the hot new turks on campus and ended up killing their careers in one fell swoop.
EDIT: Aha! A Dennis Hopper quote from Onion AV! "It was a nightmare, very honestly, that movie. It was a husband-and-wife directing team who were both control freaks and wouldn't talk before they made decisions. Anyway, I was supposed to go down there for five weeks, and I was there for 17. It was so over budget."
I managed to watch this movie yesterday on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It's one of those movies that I'm pretty sure I saw as a kid but erased all memory of seeing it shortly thereafter. It was actually relatively enjoyable in a nostalgic kind of way. Reminded me a lot of Batman & Robin. All over the place but zany and creative at the same time. Nothing like the video game of course in terms of story.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Alan Silvestri's name appear on the opening credits and I really enjoyed his score. Lots of action and recurring themes. Another good old 90's score from him paritcularly after receiving his Judge Dredd score a few weeks back. I too would jump at the chance of a proper release of his score. I just hope the fact that the movie was so panned doesn't mean that the labels are less likely to bring it out.
Next on my list of video games adaptations to see is Streetfighter which is actually a big guilty pleasure of mine

Judge Dredd was panned by critics and moviegoers alike, and we still got an expanded release. Fortunately the reviews for the film normally have nothing to do with whether or not the score recieves an expansion.
