Any idea what's happened to one of my favourite composers? He doesn't seem to be attached to anything since BYZANTIUM. Love this guy's music... DEVIL'S BACKBONE/ PAN'S LABYRINTH....amazing!!

Two years isn't such a long time off for a hard-working composer. I imagine we'll hear something new by him soon. Though I guess its too late to count him among the creative team for Del Toro's Crimson Peak but IMDb lists Fernando Velasquez which I won't complain about in the least!

Navarrete's score for Byzantium is SO OVERLOOKED in my opinion! I read the novel The Passage, by Justin Cronin, while the score played often in accompaniment and it was one of those private moments that I will cherish.

More like SO DISAPPOINTING compared to the other work that he did. Not even close to some of his earlier scores. But then composers have to go with what the directors/producers want.

Yea, I have to agree with this. Kinda boring really. I'm waiting for another truly great score from him. I'm sure it's just a matter of time. I'm really surprised his career didn't catch fire after the success of PAN'S LABYRINTH.

Third times is the charm, right? wink

I've only got the following two JN scores (the stars, OBVIOUSLY, indicate how much I like them):

Pan's Labyrinth ****
Zhongkui - Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal ***½

Just like in the Rombi and Rahmans thread I just posted in, I'm looking (for "reasons") into adding another Navarrete CD to my collection. I like his thematic style of writing, so any suggestions that go in that direction, and perhaps with a choral element (like Pan's Labyrinth), would be much welcomed. Is there a compilation of his works that might be fitting to dig into?

Ta! smile

PS: I should lay off that Raspberry Liqueur...even if I still can post without too many problems in a foreign language! big grin

THE HOLE is well worth a listen.

I agree 'The Hole' is a good score. In addition, 'The Devil's Backbone'-htf. I also really like 'Hemmingway and Gellhorn' and 'Cracks'

Fireflies in the garden and Le Mar are also good.

Sounds hopeful. After waiting a while for new music I was massively disappointed in GRETA. Hope this one is him back on track.

Navarette, as well as many other Spaniards (Banos, Velazquez, Jusid) all showed so much promise a few years ago, but I've been largely underwhelmed by their work in recent years. They've become more streamlined somehow, trying to ape current international (mainly US) scoring trends that aren't necessarily their forte.

But hey -- I'll give Navarette as many chances as it takes, in case he gets back on track.
