In 2004, the legendary show came out in season sets, after originally getting released on DVD between 1999 and 2001 in FORTY single-disc volumes! Then, in 2007 and 2008, CBS/Paramount released all 3 seasons of the original Star Trek series on DVD in a "Remastered" version, with the first season being released as a "hybrid" HD-DVD/DVD format (the second season was originally planned to come out the same way, but the Blu-ray Disc victory in the high-def format war doomed the HD-DVD plans for that season). In 2009, these seasons came out on Blu-ray, and since then those remastered DVD season sets (in the unique "clear shell" packaging) have been discontinued.

Now CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution have announced that they're returning Star Trek - The Original Series: Season 1 Remastered (10 discs), Star Trek - The Original Series: Season 2 Remastered (8 discs), and Star Trek - The Original Series: Season 3 Remastered (7 discs) to DVD...and it's all happening next Tuesday! On September 16th (or as soon afterwards as the studio can deliver any orders that the retailers place) these will all become available in stores again, in slick new packaging that's pictured below. Season 1 Remastered will be DVD format only, of course. Otherwise, all on-disc content is expected to be the same as before...so if you already have the previous versions, there's probably no need to get the new ones. This is really aimed at folks who haven't gotten the last round of DVDs, and still haven't upgraded to Blu-ray. If you know of anybody like that, fill them in!

I am still surprised people buy DVD's but then I suppose I was an early blu ray adopter. But that was 5 years ago. DVD is so pathetically inferior it is waste of money. And you can buy a BD player for less than $100 now.

Generally agree but sadly not all BR transfers are equal. In some cases they are horrible, and I would rather watch an upscale DVD. Sometimes only the Directors cut is available on BR and I might prefer the theatrical cut. I buy DVD when there's no other option. I can't imagine why anyone would buy ST TOS on DVD though.

Definitely nicer packaging than the admittedly novel 'tricorder' cases. Classier, in line with Game Of Thrones packs.

This just serves to remind me that I should watch my actual DVDs once in a while instead of the drastically cut airings on MeTV. I have the TOS-R version, in three full-season sets. And I have some vacation days coming up, so...

I need to upgrade my Star Trek TOS DVD's to blu-ray.

Do the blu's have the same menu as the DVD's, with the interactive transporter panel that makes you enter every option twice?

The Bluray sets are amazing. The picture and sound quality is the best this series has ever looked. Even with the new special effects it is outstanding. I'm a purist and generally do not like anything tampered with but these sets are sensational. CBS Digital really spent the time and care on these and it shows. And its a no-brainer - all the original episodes complete and uncut and chock full of extras running additional hours. If you have a BD player, why would you just settle for sub-standard DVD quality? Anyway, just my two cents worth.

I also love that the TOS Blu-Rays contain the option of watching the original unaltered episodes with classic effects, or the new remastered episodes, all on the same discs. Something that wasn't able to be offered for TNG, since all its effects post-production work was done on SD-resolution video instead of 35mm (still, the remastered TNG episodes are equally brilliant, and CBS Digital has done a tremendous job recreating and updating the show while remaining entirely faithful to the original versions).

While it's nice CBS is offering these sets for people who genuinely just don't care about HD or can't afford to upgrade to an HDTV or Blu-Ray player, for anyone who can, buying these DVDs is basically just throwing money away. When on sale, the complete TOS on Blu can be had from Amazon for well under $100.

I am not sure, maybe is just my nostalgia talking from watching Star Trek in re-runs after school, but I think I like the unimproved episodes effects better.

Generally I dislike "upgrading" classic film or television series with new effects, but sometimes it worked for ST TOS. There's some really cool "beauty shots" of the Enterprise from different angles.

On the other hand I think they mucked up The Doomsday Machine. The new CGI has the Enterprise flying around like an X-Wing fighter and it just looks stupid.

For the most part it was the same 5 or so effects shots used over and over in TOS and those matte lines are atrocious.
