I cannot recall any Director cut movies where either the movie or the score were improved by it.
It's either a studio gimmick, or a director that cannot let it go.

Aliens: Special Edition. Far superior to the original theatrical version.

Let me think…

The Wrath of Khan. I would keep the scene with Peter. I’d keep the extended sickbay scene. I think I’d ditch everything else. I don’t like the extended spectacles scene, I can’t stand the alternate take of the Regula crew (that may be 20 years of familiarity with the original) and I don’t need Spock’s introduction to Kirk’s son.

The only thing I’d keep from Aliens would be auto guns. Ripley’s lost daughter is just too on the nose and introducing the colony before the marines see it undercuts much of the mystery of seeing the colony the first time through their eyes.

Blade Runner: Maaaaaybe.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: So close. I hate the TNG sound design on the bridge (why didn’t they just use Wrath of Khan?). I don’t like the new matte on Vulcan (or the old one). I like most of the new editing. Gotta have Spock’s tear. I like the old messed up Enterprise matte before the wing walk scene. I like the outside shots of the Enterprise at the end of the wormhole scene and when Vejur’s probe is zapped onto the ship. So like usual, it’s a mixed bag.

Das Boot: I’ve seen so many editions I have no idea which one is which.

The Undiscovered Country: Next!

Star Wars: I’m sorry, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

I will happily take all the non CGI non updated effects in TMP. I like that the repaired the error when the space dock frame overlapped the space pod matte before, other than that they took out great effects and added less impressive effects in and took the mystery away and made Vger less interesting. I will take the original cut all the way, except for the Spock tear.

The original Das Boot is amazingly long, and then he made it longer, i cannot take it anymore.

The original cut of Undiscovered County is so much better, do I really want to hear Scotty sounding like a racist fool? I also cannot stand that rubber mask gag, I really do not understand what Nick Meyer was thinking, that was an awful addition.
