I also loved this incarnation of Godzilla, and I think Gareth Edwards did a fine job. The limited SFX, I am certain, had more to do with the film's slim budget, which (when adjusted for inflation) less than Roland Emmerich squandered back in 1998 (I admit to hard feelings. Back in 1998 I was writing a lucrative series of classic Godzilla novels for Random House, but after the Emmerich disaster, no one wanted to hear the name Godzilla and my final novel of the series was cancelled).
I was most impressed with the revisionist origin, making Godzilla a stand-in for the USA instead of something we created...Nice. Sorry, but I didn't need the humor. Too much of that in the Toho films of the 1970s. I only wish Edwards wasn't making a Star Wars film next because we're not getting another Godzilla for three or four years.

I just wish he wasn't making a Star Wars film
Have yet to see this version of Godzilla. Although I DO enjoy the Emmerich version ( mainly since I grew up with the Toho movies and can't feel they're anything other than ridiculous themselves, so all the outcry over destroying Godzilla's "legacy" was kind of , ummm, silly
When first seeing the previews for this new 'Zilla, I admit I was sold, mainly due to Cranston's hysteria in the trailers, very effective. But then upon learning that Cranston takes a backseat ( or basically gets stuffed in the trunk ) while Young Actors take center stage... kinda killed my enthusiasm.
Then again, Edwards' Monsters was a pretty over-rated movie too.
But as soon as Godzilla hits RedBox I will watch it and see if maybe it is better than the mixed buzz says.
