It's been a week now since the iPod classic 160GB was quietly discontinued. I am somewhat puzzled why there isn't more discussion about this. I personally love this device and can't imagine having to live without it. Sure, I have hundreds and hundreds of CD's on my shelves, and now I know why I prefer real CD's to downloads. If they simply stop selling devices that can actually play your music (apart from your pc), what's the point in having all those mp3 downloads you paid for. At least I can still listen to my CD's (and in better quality!).

But I like iPods for their compactness and shuffle play and (one more thing) I absolutely love the clickwheel. I don't want streaming, I want to be independent from an internet connection to be able to listen to my music. The Nano and other models that are still around simply don't have the capacity. And I don't want an expensive iPhone to listen to my music.

So when I heard the news that there will be no more iPod classic from now on, I couldn't believe it. Then I panicked and bought one spare classic in a local store. A week later (that was yesterday) I saw the models vanish from the shops and I panicked again, and bought another classic in a store in a town nearby (I located it via the internet and saw that they still had some of the last ones). The seller told me he had sold quite a lot of them after the news broke that Apple will not manufacture them anymore. I still have a good working one that is three years old and an older model that holds 80GB, also still working fine. At the time it had not enough room for my music collection and I bought the 160GB when that came out. So now I have four good working iPods with clickwheels. Am I crazy? In any case my panic is over and I sleep better again. My collection of iPods will last a good few years. That's more important to me than the money.

Is there any sign of a larger one - say 250GB?

That'd be reet handy.

I wouldn't count on it. They will probably kill all iPods soon. They want you to listen to streamed music on iPhones.

With iPhones soon to be available in 128GB, maybe Apple will eventually replace the high-capacity hard disk based iPod with a 128 or 160GB flash memory version of the iPod touch. It would certainly help with battery life.

All companies are pushing streaming. I'm awaiting that dreaded day one can no longer download an mp3 or video file from iTunes or Amazon. Amazon went directly into streaming video only service.

That makes kittens sad.

That day would truly suck. Still using my iPod touch every day when I ride in to work. It's essential to my mental well being when I ride the bus with loud idiots. wink

I just bought a new one a couple months ago because my old was at capacity. This does make me sad -- as much as people like to hate on Apple, this is a terribly convenient tool and the push toward streaming and less customizable storage and playback options does not sit well with me. I can only hope that my current iPods last a good long time and that by the time they die there's a decent alternative.

I have one of the iPod Classic 160B.B., which temporarily shut down, and I was forced to buy a second generation model. When THAT one shut down, my iPod Classic started working again. It's a pity that Apple won't be making this model anymore.

I use my 160Gb iPod Classic every single day....I'd be lost without it....as long as it lasts for a bit longer (it's about 6 years old now I think) I'm ok...but the discontinuation of the model puzzles me...would have thought there would be a market for continued development of the model (not to mention larger sizes)...

I bought another one about four months ago when Amazon had a really good offer on. It's in a draw waiting its turn. I'm still using the 80GB that I bought about eight years ago. It's a whole entertainment centre, not just music, but dramas, documentaries & comedies (recorded from the radio). I wouldn't like to live without one now.

I know I'm showing my age here, but I come from an age when things (mostly) lasted years, & you weren't expected to upgrade to the next gadget every couple of years. All this is one of my fears about streaming, they can stop it, change it, whatever, & you've just got to go along with it.

I'm not that old but I feel the same way. I finally "upgraded" my (still functional) 2006 flip-phone for an iPhone that I'm assured will be outdated within months and will stop working within a year or two even if I treat it well. My iPod has been going for 4 or 5 years. I can't fathom the mindset of my friends and siblings who are constantly breaking their stuff and upgrading to new models! But then, I also can't fathom the appeal of the cloud. Its function for back-up purposes, syncing and so forth, yes. But as an on-the-spot source of art and entertainment? It feels so ephemeral, and there's so often when I have, at best, spotty reception on my phone. Not to mention the short battery life of the multipurpose always-connected doo-dads! I'm becoming a curmudgeon!

Even though Apple have stated that the iPod is now a declining business for them I don't see them fully dropping the lines any time soon as it is a cheaper intro to the iOS operating system than buying the iPhone (of which the crazy price really, really, isn't justified with the hardware spec compared to other phones which have been around for the last few months)

Rumor has it they will give the Touch iPod a storage boost (most likely to 128GB) during the next iPad refresh in October this year...then possibly one more revision of the Touch...

Although they were also supposed to be introducing 24bit iTunes ALAC downloads sometime this year so a beast of an iPod will be required (either that or you will have to kill your WIFI and/or data allowance)

100% agreed here. It is ridiculous how it became the norm for people to replace things so fast. I had my 30gb zune for quite some time and then replaced it with an 80 gig zune that I used until the rechargable battery was not charging. Eventually my current 80gb zune will have the same issue and I will have to find out some other form of music listening.

Like others have said, simply having the capacity on a touch screen device is not good. You need those buttons so you can change your music while driving without taking your eyes off the road. Though maybe Siri will handle that at some point.

I have slowly been migrating my music into the cloud. Over time I got a good amount of my favorite music up into the cloud on Google Music taking up half of the free space they allow. I still downloaded a number of my favorites to my Android tablet so that when I am on an airplane I can still listen to some music. Plus there are times when traveling where you aren't going to have a good connection but still want your content. I love the cloud but I don't want to rely on streaming all of my music from my own collection constantly. It just isn't going to keep the quality up to the standards I expect.

Agreed! I have an old LP player still working from the late 60's! I have a CD player, speakers, and Amplifier I'm still using from the mid 80's. My refrigerator is 23 years old and works like it's brand new.

But more on topic I want to own the CD/DVD/BR or at least have a digital file on my HD. If service goes down I can still play my stuff locally. Much less worry about service down time or lost content because of competing licenses between the studios and streaming services.

Whenever I have to be in one place for any length of time, my 160gb goes with me. I have a 30g and an iPod touch and neither one are as steady a perfomer as the 160gb. This makes me sad but I have faith that this one will endure. The 30gb was purchased in 2007 and is still quite reliable.

Well, this sucks. I love my 160GB iPod. I use it constantly and thankfully is still in good shape. I just hate kmowing that when it dies, I'm pretty well screwed. I have an iPhone 5 which 60GB of space, but...damn it...I'll miss that 100GB and the fact that the iPhone battery sucks ass.
