LA BUCA
Music Composed by Pino Donaggio
Performed by The Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Gianluca Podio
Release date: 09/29/2014

The new score composed by Pino Donaggio (Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Passion, Patrick) for the film of Daniele Ciprì, starring Sergio Castellito, Rocco Papaleo and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi.

The film is about two men who meet by chance in a bar. Armando (Papaleo) is a poor man recently released from prison after twenty-seven years of wrongful incarceration—or, at least, he says he is innocent. Oscar (Castellitto) is not so much a lawyer as a ruffian who sees a business opportunity and offers to arrange a retrial.

The favorite composer of Brian de Palma provides a surprising and charming score—a personal homage from Donaggio to a composer he much admires, George Gershwin. It is a romantic, melodic score with light-hearted passages, beautifully orchestrated, and far from the suspense sound for which the composer is better known.

The music has been recorded with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gianluca Podio, with the prestigious Steffano Bollani as piano soloist.

To be honest, I haven't really gotten into the last few new Pino's I've bought (Patrick, Passion, Do You Like Hitchcock) that much, so I will give the samples a twirl and decide after that.
Still, mucho appreciation for releasing new Pino stuff.

In contrast, I find Donaggio's latest work to be really wonderful. His prime was certainly the 70's and 80's (though "Never Talk to Strangers" is a strong contender for my favorite, and that's from the mid-90s, so...). The actual scoring of the film "Passion" was brilliant, but it's a strange [but good!!] experience as a stand-alone (not unlike Yared's "Moon in the Gutter"). I bailed out of the film of "Patrick" even though the scoring was also brilliant, but that album is fantastic! This new one sounds great - very nice to hear Donaggio in a lighter mode again. Love the orchestrations in the clips - oh how I wish more composers these days were directed to put lush strings in their scores!

Alas, I'm not so sold on the samples for this one.
I do like Pino's more comedic scores (love me some HOME MOVIES and DON CAMILLO), but this one ain't sparkin with me.
With so much stuff coming at us thick and fast, this one will have to be deferred, at least, for now.

I picked this up in Quartet's sale and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

As did I, despite not liking the samples, yet being a HUGE Donaggio fan. It's why I hate samples....it's a different experience than an album. The moment I heard that patented Donaggio string sound, I loved it.

I didn't dislike the samples, but they didn't blow me away enough to commit.

Listening to the whole thing through, it's goddamned delightful. I don't know why I ever doubted Pino Donaggio, he's never let me down.

Damn. I didn't bother with this, because the samples did nowt for me either.
I've nearly bought it the last two times I've done a Quartet order, but removed it from my basket, even though I love his lighter scores like Don Camillo, Home Movies and Tchin Tchin.
Hopefully, it will still be there and dirt cheap the next time I do a Quartet order.

Yeah, it's a nice breezy listen, and not annoying, Kev, check it out. Glad I have company regarding samples! The cover references "tribute to George Gershwin" , so it's got that sound in places - not really any heavy synths or pop beats, either.
