He recently scored the drama 'The End of the Tour' starring Jason Segal and Jesse Eisenberg from the director of 'The Spectacular Now'.
'Story finds Lipsky accompanying Wallace across the country on a book tour promoting “Infinite Jest,” just as Wallace starts to become famous. Along the way, jealousy and competition bubbles up between the two writers as they discuss women, depression and the pros and cons of fame.'
Also after Fifty Shades of Grey he'll be scoring 'Tuilip Fever' a period drama starring Dane DeHaan, Christoph Waltz and Judi Dench.
'A 17th century romance in which an artist falls for a married young woman while he's commissioned to paint her portrait. The two invest in the risky tulip market in hopes to build a future together.'
Interesting, Say what you will about Elfman, he sure picks a diverse set of projects and seems to be going more and more towards quieter, dramatic pictures. David Foster Wallace is one of my favorite writers, and the book upon which this film is based was an interesting study of the man in a very specific period of his life. But I really can't see it being of that much interest to anyone who's not a fan of Wallace or Infinite Jest. I, however am quite intrigued to see it, especially with Elfman scoring it.
Elfman and Thomas Newman are the two working composers I'm most interested in at the moment, and both are at their best when they get to work outside of their established genres.
As a long-time Elfman freak, I get way more excited when he scores low key movies like his next several - BIG EYES, THE END OF THE TOUR, 50 SHADES OF GRAY and TULIP FEVER - than I do about the big action fantasy projects he does anymore.
More exciting still is his work for non-narrative films (like THE UNKNOWN KNOWN) and for stage / theater. I'm very excited that a commercial recording of "Rabbit And Rouge" is on the way!
"Sommersby" was a real surprise for me. "Nightmare before Xmas" was. "Dolores Claiborne" was. Sorry but I can't say I've experienced such surprises and thrills from Elfman of late...
