Yes, The Richard Pryor SUPERMAN.

Just got the 14 Disc DVD ULTIMATE COLLECTION, so I've been revisiting all the versions and films.

Opening has a rather slapstick quality about it with a Ken Thorne cue which reminds me of John Williams in his FITZWILLY kind of mode. I like the music better than what's happening on screen which to me seems really silly and almost amateurish and stupid. Did anyone really think that stuff was funny? Blind men walking into traffic and falling into holes? I mean really.

I kind of got turned off by the opening so I stopped watching. Does it get better?

Please share your thoughts on SUPERMAN 3 Film and Score.
Giorgio Moroder is listed in the credits as providing songs. Your thoughts also on them please.

I'll go back and watch this sometime. Maybe.

Thanks.

In watching the Behind the Scenes and making of Documentary materials in the collection it's
amazing how much, what seems like utter contempt various players and personalities had for each other in the making of SUPERMAN 1 AND 2.

Donner absolutely refusing to return to finish SUPERMAN II if Pierre Spengler was involved and Margot Kidder's contempt for the Salkinds and Spengler.

Did they ever do a CELEBRITY DEATH MATCH with Donner and Spengler. Would love to see these two tear each other apart as Stop Motion Puppets.

Obviously happier times before the poop hit the fan with these two. Brando has such a ... eating grin.

Ken Thorne's score is great. I have always loved his Superman scores and was blown away by the FSM treatment!

Oh, its bad, but it's still my second favorite SM film. Was a huge RP fan at the time. Clark Kent vs Superman fight. But mostly for the ending with the computer complex gone rogue, laser beams, etc. Reminds me so much of a Fleischer cartoon come to life. Such goofy fun.

Would have loved to see Pryor in a STAR TREK film. That might have been a hoot. Instead of the Whale Story in STAR TREK IV they could have had the probe only be able to communicate with foul mouth Stand-up comics from the 70's and 80's and they had to go back in time to round up Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy to communicate.

You do know that Murphy was supposed to be in ST IV?

In the words of the immortal Dana Carvey doing the immortal Johnny Carson:

"I did not know that."

That would have been fun.

Yeah, the cartoony aspect is kinda dumb but I really enjoy Thorne's music for this main title.

The film overall has some great highlights, in particular Chris Reeve's acting in a certain scene already mentioned. You've got to accept a lot of dumb with the good however.

Not Superman IV dumb, but still.

You are asking – does the film get better?
I see nothing wrong with the opening. (When I was a child of the 80s – I did miss the space opening – but, you still get the end titles – and – they did do a TV Version with the space credits: HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKvIKvwifP4
The writers decided to go in a totally different direction to the first two films. The formula of the first two films has been done, and they have made their money.
How do you top off those first two entries – you get comedian Richard Pryor.
The film is not a comedy – and no – it can’t be taken seriously either – but it’s the greatest “comedy” film of all time.
If you like Stir Crazy – then why wouldn’t you like Superman III?
The opening montage is so much fun – that you don’t even notice the credits rolling beneath the screen.
It is supposed to set you up for the feeling of this film. There is nothing wrong with the opening. Richard Lester did a similar “feeling of comedy” in Superman II – (during the super storm sequence that The Three Villains From Krypton created using their super icy breath – you’ve got scenes of man falling down in a telephone booth, laughing, and a couple who lose their wigs – “my hair! You’re hair what about mine?” As well as that stunt with the rollerblades). Richard Lester is known for his comedy – but Richard Donner using Ned Beatty as Otis – that was comedy as well (no kidding!) – and so was Christopher Reeve’s performance as Clark Kent!
Please don’t knock Superman III just because it’s a good old fashioned comedy – without your modern DARK elements – such as Man Of Steel for example – this film does have a twist once Superman gets given synthetic Kryptonite handed over to him by Richard Pryor!
The film is lovingly shot, very beautiful to look at, there are hardly any night scenes, which make the film a pleasure to watch, and that is basically what I miss in these modern flicks – all the new films seem to be black and white, there is hardly any color on the screen in today’s film – stupid CGI.
This film – along with the others – is obviously unique, and it has a different flavor, but that is what makes it so special.
It’s got the best flying scenes effects, and seeing Christopher Reeve at his peak, in terms of his physique – is absolutely an inspiration, I also love his hairstyle THE BEST in this third entry!
Let’s play those End Titles!
….by the way – where have you been? Only now – you get to watch The Original Superman Series?

Vaughn's line is one of my all-time favorite quotes in all of cinema.

Didn't one of the early concepts for 3 include consideration of Dolly Parton as a witchy villain? Imagine that campfest!

That was probably carried over to make Supergirl.

The worst of the four Chris Reeve SUPERMAN films. A few good moments but Pryor and Lester let off their leashes is worse than a dose of Kryptonite for Superman.

You are correct. One of the early concepts for SUPERMAN III involved Braniac. I can see how that evolved into "computer expert" Gus Gorman.

How can Superman III be the worst when Superman IV (Nuclear Man) is around? I know Alexander Courage's score is awesome and Chris Reeve brings a lot of heart, but seriously Superman IV is a worse movie.

Totally agree. And yes Courage's score is excellent but I still find myself listening to Thorne's Superman scores more.

I thought so too for years, then I watched them both again recently and III is by far worse for me. I mean really, blue collar workers build a super computer in the Grand Canyon based on scribbles Gus Gorman made on some napkins and bits of paper?

You really think that's worse than Nuclear Man, Lex's nephew (?), and Clark's horrible new love interest? Eeesh...not to mention the son of his love interest from the previous movie?

Aside from the music and Reeve, it doesn't get much worse than Superman IV. You can also tell how much more cheaply made it was. It just looks like trash.

I found at least a few things in Superman III entertaining.

Sup 3 is "bad" in a good way. Sup 4 is just "bad".
