I recently viewed the BluRay of the recent remake of Robocop, with little expectation but some interest. Picked it up cheap/on sale. I like the original two (sans #2`s music) so I instinctively thought it a grand error to remake it. Some of the pre-release photos gave a 'cheap' impression, chief among them how Alex Murphy didn`t look robotic at all, in his body-formed rubber suit. Extremely good. I lament that with such good effort they could not have bent/wound the tale around the aforementioned 1 and 2, in essence not "remaking" it. However, this was one of the most pleasant surprises I have had for film. The work *is* absolutely true to the spirit of the originals. The main actor (as with most therein) is excellent, and the story scope is pretty sober & smart. I would point to some of the execution of robot vs. Robo sequences as being one-dimensional and unimaginative, but in all other respects this film is impressive. It is also fairly gutsy in some of the material it touches upon, unafraid to present subjects or a viewpoint. If you enjoyed the originals and District 9, you`ll want to give this one a chance. Recommended.

Indeed "true to the spirit", but without Paul Verhoven's mad edge. This is what passes for subversive in the mass media after the 0.1% have closed ranks and decreed that nothing dangerous will be intentionally sponsored. We'll have to stick with STAR TREK re-plays for that.
