Anyone know of this CD? It has the original cover image, except with a blue border. There are bonus tracks, and I think they are by other artists playing Barbarella tunes. It is on a label with a suspect name like "Hollywood Classics" or "Soundtrack Specials" or something. Am I correct in assuming this is an unmentionable, and that it is mastered from vinyl?

The CD was released in 2004 and was widely available (I bought it twice on Amazon). The CD was released by Sound Track Classics and I does not sound like it was mastered from the vinyl. The sound is excellent. The bonus tracks consist of five "lounge" arrangements of Barbarella themes by "The Young Lovers," all released with the film as promos. There are also three radio promos, each about a minute long. A final note: one pressing had a plain CD, the other has Jane Fonda as Barbarella on a white background for a label. On both releases, the CD booklet opens into a small poster of that same image. I don't know which pressing came first.

Harkit as well... same content, same cover, released in 2002 before Soundtrack Classics.

I haven't listened to this in quite a while. I don't remember having issues with the sound quality.

I purchased mine in 2009 and I have the one with Jane Fonda on the disc label, so I assume this is the 2nd pressing. And I don't find anything wrong with the sound quality of this release.

Sorry, but having the original vinyl and all CD versions mentioned - the CD releases are all sound like crap compared to the crystal clear LP pressing. The CDs are surely not mastered from an LP source, otherwise they would sound much, much better. Let's hope that one day finally an official CD will be issued by one of the usual suspects...

I, too have the vinyl, and agree that it sounds wonderful. Just because something is mastered from great vinyl does not mean that it is mastered well.

What do you think the source for the CD is? A safety copy, or a personal tape copy of someone involved with the album?

Ummm.... I and others are waiting for it to come out from a label with a better track record than Harkit.

The blue CD that I mentioned in my original post is not on Harkit, but on the renowned Soundtrack Classics label, that bastion of quality.

Not only is the thing mastered from vinyl, but it sounds like the files are bad mp3 rips that someone with a low-speed internet connection downloaded from a website in 1997.

Currently, I am not able to digitize my vinyl, so I picked this up for cheap for the convenience of having it on a CD.

It is just awful. I have never heard the Harkit, but I would assume it sounds better than this.

Meanwhile, it is astounding that there is not a high-quality release of this album as of 2016. Are the masters missing?

The Dynovoice label that released BARBARELLA was part of the Bob Crewe Group of Companies, which also included the Newvoice and Crewe labels. Crewe never sold out to or combined with any of the major labels. He died on September 11, 2014, at the age of 83. I suspect that, if they exist, the LP masters for his recordings are part of his estate.

Thanks. Is the LP a different recording from the film version?
