Thxs! I need to get someone a birthday present, and this may do the trick! Only thing holding me back is the gold and white handles. Did the classic on screen phasers have those colors?
One source I saw said the white Phaser appeared in the first eight episodes. The gold Phaser is fictional and was for the TOS 40th anniversary. I don't know if this info is 100% correct.

If Star Trek-like Phasers were real, would the NRA demand that Americans have the right to own them? I think we need to revisit the Second Amendment before it's too late.
"A little time line detailing is needed here. The black and white phaser did show up for the first eight episodes then disappeared forever. From the very first look, of the black and white pistol phaser all the eye sees is a nondescript gun-like thing. There is the white handle, the black upper body and the silver barrel with the clear tip. It did not look very good on the show and was a little "out-of-place" for there was so much color everywhere else, bright color, gold shirts, blue shirts, red guard rails, etc. Which is why I believe they disappeared only after eight shows to be replaced with two more "colorful" paint schemas... A true black handle with matching black Phaser one in a bright blue main pistol body for the long shots and subdued very dark gray handle with matching phaser one with a medium blue-gray main pistol body for the inserts or close-ups."

It's amazing the things one never picks up on. Granted I've seen Star Trek TOS mostly on a small screen for 40 years. But I never noticed the odd colored handles in the earlier episodes. I'm revisiting the uncut versions on Netflix so I'll have to take note of the difference.
Not bad quality for 14 bucks. It even makes the phaser sound effect and the overload and detonation sound! Maybe I'll take it with me when I go trick-or-treating.
They actually redid the phaser altogether, not just the pain scheme, on the TV series. Originally, the grille pushed up to form a sight for aiming, and the beam emitter pushed outward and lit up. It was moved by the little wheel on the detachable phaser 1. These "hero" phasers were used in close ups in the early episodes and not so much later on. The few close ups we got with the more colorful prop didn't have the raised grille (however the emitter still lit up).
So the white handle/black body on the toy is just a different pain scheme. The body itself is still based on the updated prop design.
As a kid, though, I always found the early phaser interesting. I painted my Exploration Set model kit black with a white handle. I even tried to make a leather "holster" like they used in those episodes.
