It's a bit off topic, but any ideas what he will be doing in the last two thirds of the year? I am sure he would probably enjoy some time off after such busy year: He recorded half of Jupiter Ascending probably a year or so ago or before the movie was even shot, Tomorrowland started recording in September, Inside Out in November/December, Jurassic world should be completed late April... after that... nothing announced yet.
Yea, I had speculated about that a bit too, on JWFan. At various points there where several big options for him in the second half of 2015:
(Nov 25) Finding Dory - went to Thomas Newman, plus film was pushed back to June 2016 (Nov 25) The Good Dinosaur - went to Thomas Newman (Dec 18) Star Wars 7 - went to John Williams (Dec 25) Mission: Impossible 5 - went to Joe Kraemer, then film was pushed up to July 2015 anyway
Beyond that, though, there where some other options. Here's what I said in May of 2014
If Joe Kraemer gets the Mission Impossible 5 gig over Giacchino, he could score a Q4 2015 film. Some possibilities:
(Oct 2) Frankenstein (Paul McGuigan) (Oct 9) Jungle Book (Jon Favreau) (Nov 25) Midnight Special (Jeff Nichols)
so nothing too exciting. Most of the big Q4 2015 films already have composers attached:
(Oct 16) Crimson Peak (Guillermo del Toro) - Fernando Velázquez (Nov 6) Bond 24 (Sam Mendes) - presumably Thomas Newman, even with him having The Good Dinosaur opening the same month (Nov 20) Hunger Games 4 (Francis Lawrence) - James Newton Howard (Nov 25) The Good Dinosaur (Bob Peterson/Pixar) - Thomas Newman (Dec 18) Star Wars Episode VII (JJ Abrams) - John Williams (Dec 18) Inferno (Ron Howard) - presumably Hans Zimmer (Dec 23) Kung Fu Panda 3 - presumably Zimmer and/or Powell
Since then, Frankenstein has been renamed to Victor Frankenstein and will be scored by Craig Armstrong Favreau's Jungle Book has been pushed back to 2016 and will be scored by John Debney Midnight Special still has no composer attached, though. That would be a good one.
Here's some other options (Oct 2) London Is Falling - sequel to Olympus has Fallen. No composer attached, but I doubt Giacchino would do this. (Oct 30) Scouts vs. Zombies - Mathew Margeson is attached (Nov 6) The Peanuts Movie - Christophe Beck is attached (Nov 25) The Martian - Ridley Scott's latest. Will probably be scored by Marc Streitenfeld or someone like that. (Dec 25) Monster Trucks - This would be a fun one! Attached for composer is a Dave Sardy
He could surprise us with a random comedy score, like perhaps the Vacation reboot coming October 9. That'd be cool. I'm still waiting for a score release of 50/50 and This Is Where I Leave You.
However, I bet Giacchino will take a break and not score anything until 2016.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in association with The School of Visual Arts have announced that on May 29, 2015, they will be offering a special advanced screening of Pixar Animation Studio’s Inside Out (June 19, 2015) to be followed by a Q&A with co-writer/co-director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera.
