Whoa! Unused John Carpenter themes? This sounds like a treasure trove of serious coolness.

Wow! This sounds really interesting. Wish there was more information. Anybody out there aware of unreleased music by Carpenter? That would be great if there were unused themes or any music for that matter from Escape from New York or Big Trouble in Little China.

Well, there is at least the 'lost' score to the original cut of THE FOG !
Great news - maybe he also found the stereo tapes of ASSAULT ?

I think some of that 'Lost Fog' is heard in the dvd/blu ray docs over
silent behind the scenes footage - screetchy high pitched synths, I always
assumed those snippets were his rejected score. Check it out, see what you think!

This is a surprise and I'm hoping it's not a modern synth re-recording.
There's the unused Fog stuff and also some early, alternate Prince of Darkness stuff that he scrapped.

I have a feeling this will be from more recent work, but that's just a guess.

Yeah, more music from his anonymous bar band is exactly what we need!

Bring on that early Fog score, though. That would be beautiful.

John Carpenter will be making an appearance in Brooklyn, NY, USA on February 5th to discuss this said album in a tribute to the filmmaker at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), followed by retrospective screenings of all of his feature films, all during the month of February.

I preordered from Amazon. It's pretty cheap there.

There's some really good stuff on here, but alas a few stinkers as well. Some tracks seem unfinished and really don't sound like JC at all. I think this was a missed opportunity for JC to work with Alan Howarth again. Don't know if maybe their parting wasn't in good terms though.

Carpenter's son is co-composer, so that might explain it.
I doubt he and Howarth will ever reunite, sadly.
This very well may be the last new Carpenter music we get unless he does volume 2.

Why? Is he sick?

I don't think so. He's pretty much retired these days. From what I've read in his interviews, he's just kinda moved on and the industry has changed too much in his mind. Can't really blame him.
I'd like to see him make at least one more flick though.

I honestly don't agree with this at all, and have listened to this streaming on NPR repeatedly throughout the day. I'm as giddy as a schoolboy hearing these throwbacks. I've just about demolished "Vortex" and "Night" listening to their initial streams, so going through "Obsidian" through "Purgatory" today was a revelation. After damn near 10 hours straight of nothing but this, I think I would say this is the coolest prog rock album I've heard since discovering classics by Can, Goblin, Tangerine Dream, Yes, King Crimson, etc. you name it! The fun thing is you can hear Carpenter and his collaborators drawing influence from those guys (especially Goblin) and even recent acts like Umberto and Steve Moore's work. I am dying to get my vinyl copy of this (and digital download!) but this stream will suffice for the coming week. Check it out!

I haven't heard all the samples yet. Didn't want to spoil it until I got the actual CD. I really liked the one track that I did hear - Vortex.

I'm in the same boat. Saw the NPR page and was severely torn, but I'll put it off till next week.

It appears Carpenter's still working on music though.

We're working on another album as we speak, Dark Blues. We've gotten about 40 or 50 minutes worth, but we're still tracking and playing around with it. We'll see what feels good.

What can we expect on Dark Blues?

We'll see how it gets released. Maybe nobody wants to listen to it. We don't care: it's just making music and having fun.

Yeah, it's a solid album that mostly harkens back to JC's 80s period and thankfully less to his 90s scores. I enjoyed it a lot the couple of times I played it and because there's no deadline a lot of the tracks sound more fleshed out as opposed to his iconic scores.

The 80s are back!
