Six years ago, Scott Bettencourt published this interesting little guide to what Barry scores remained unreleased or incomplete. I did look for the relevant thread but couldn't find it so I'm starting a new one.

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/daily/article.cfm?articleID=6030

In the six years since the article, of the titles mentioned, we've had new releases of Hanover Street (Varese), Mike's Murder (Prometheus), The Golden Child (LLL), The Black Hole, Day of the Locust, The Deep and The Wrong Box (Intrada) and a re-recording of Mister Moses (Prometheus).

If you ignore the Bonds and the scores that are likely lost, I wonder which of the others are coming in the near future?

And what titles that aren't on this list would you like to see re-released on CD? (mine would be Jagged Edge, which hasn't been available for 22 years).

I've only just realised that The Dove and Follow Me! soundtracks on Spotify are the Harkit vinyl transfers. As Intrada did a properly licensed version of The Wrong Box, could those two be on Intrada's schedule too?

You want to correct your list.

TOUCHED BY LOVE has NEVER been release. You're thinking of FIRST LOVE which La-La Land issued.

I hope that John's rejected scores to YEAR OF THE COMET and GOODBYE LOVER are released soon.

I'm hoping the second Prometheus rerecording is THE BETSY

others we need on CD

BOOM
THE DOVE
TAMARIND SEED
FOLLOW ME

3 of the above 4 have been released on LP transfers by Harkit but they are not great and of dubious legality

I'd also like rerecordings of his stage shows 'Brighton Rock', 'The Little Prince and The Aviator and' Lolita, My Love'

Elanor & Franklin & The White House Years, Legend of The Lone Ranger hasn't been on CD yet. There is still quit a bit of Barry that if exists could possibly be released, and if not available hopefully a great re recording like Mister Moses could happen. The more Barry the better.

The Betsy is my biggest holy grail.

I think the upcoming Prometheus will be ‘The Betsy’ as well.

Of the incomplete releases on Scott’s list, ‘The Day of the Locust’ was only a straight reissue of the LP by Intrada. I’m not sure how much more score there is for ‘Indecent Proposal’, but I’m guessing the main themes and cues are on the existing release.

I’m interested in the situation with the ‘Cotton Club’ and ‘Peggy Sue’ scores. I haven’t seen either of those films, how much music by Barry is in them i.e. did he write enough for there to be complete score releases?

I’d like to see new releases of ‘Legend of the Lone Ranger’ and ‘Jagged Edge’. I’m surprised they aren’t already available. Same goes for ‘Howard The Duck’.

I would imagine Lone Ranger to be fertile Intrada ground.
I wonder if any hold-ups are down to the C&W aspects alongside the Barry material (Merle Haggard narration...songs etc).

Jagged Edge was released through Varese CD Club 22 years ago. Does anyone know if they hold this in perpetuity?

I know. Unfortunately I only have the LP, though I believe the sound on the CD wasn't great. I always assumed they held 'Quiller' forever as well after that was one of their Club releases years ago, so I'd be interested to know myself.

There are at least two fairly substantial cues from "Indecent Proposal" that weren't included on the soundtrack CD's suite. It would be nice to have an expanded/complete "Indecent Proposal" in film order and divided into cues rather than the long 20 minute suite on the CD.

I've seen the film of "The Day of the Locust" a few times and off the top of my head there isn't anything missing from the LP/CD aside from (maybe) some source cues. But the LP/CD already includes full versions of a few Barry-penned source cues (and for one scene original 1930s-style underscoring for a movie within the movie). Many (all?) of these cues run longer on the LP/CD than in the film even.

If the rights to "Boom!" could be settled for a legit release & also include the Legrand and Dankworth rejected scores that would be wonderful.

Interesting. I was going to say I'd have to watch the film again and pick out the music, but frankly I can't be bothered. Never liked it, even with Demi Moore looking her best. I like the suite as presented on the disc however, I think it flows well. I like the Lisa Stansfield song too.

The DVD has been sitting on my desk for quite some time now waiting for me to do a music rip. As I recall, the piece I particularly want is the subtle variation of the main theme(s) when Robert Redford's character tells of his first love (!) ... the girl on the train. This is the key sequence in the film in which the audience has the opportunity to change allegiance, realising that his character is not the sleaze-ball he has so far appeared to be. It's a master-stroke of scoring.

As for the song: well the melody is lovely but the warblings, which start quite well, just become tedious, IMHO. Still, I suppose it's better than most of the other songs on the album. smile

And, yes, I'd love a new release with individual cues. But this is way down the list, following such essential works (for me) as The Tamarind Seed, Seance on a Wet Afternoon, Love Among the Ruins, et al. and, of course, the aforementioned The Betsy.

Here's hoping.

How far did John Barry get with his non soundtrack work 'The Seasons'?. He was working on it in 2007/8. Even if there's just a few sketches, perhaps Nic Raine could orchestrate them into a performable piece.

Apparently (I could be wrong) it was just a few sketches. Though I'd bet the Barry estate is still holding an iron grip on all of his sketches/scores. It sounds like gaining access to them for any reason would be near impossible, sadly.

"Quiller" wasn't a club release, it was a regular one. You might recall Varese Sarabande did three John Barry releases in the same line in 1988: "The Lion In Winter", "The Chase" and "The Quiller Memorandum". While "Lion" and "The Chase" stayed in print a few years, "The Quiller Memorandum" was deleted very, very quickly after release, almost as if it was pulled. I don't know why.

Cheers

Why do we feel it's a foregone conclusion the [ 'Barry Estate' ] - aka That Obligatory Meanie starting with an El and ending in an E) - will inevitably end up the ultimate villain in all this (along with the usual suspects)?

I'm simply talking about the written material: sketches and scores. No one has been allowed access to them, so unless that's changed I'd assume it's still the same today.
