A lovely song that disappeared completely is "Mithrandir," from the Ralph Bakshi animated version of LORD OF THE RINGS, music by Leonard Rosenman. Has the same feel to it as the main "Jupiter" theme Gustav Holtz wrote in his, much copied and referenced, "The Planets." "Mithrandir" as a song occurs over a montage of images, supposedly sung by elves mourning him. It had better exposure on the 2-lp set, and later CD. Beautiful song. Another, totally unappreciated song is the title number from THE BLUE BIRD, sort of spoke-sung by Elizabeth Taylor, in that notorious flop musical of the same name. The film itself is a real mess. The score is credited to both Irwin Kostal and Lionel Newman, though I'm not sure they wrote the songs. This song, however, has a beautiful melody and wistful lyrics, and should be heard more. There's another, gorgeous song, that hardly gets any exposure: "Winter Was Warm," from, of all things, MISTER MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL. Sung by Magoo's former fiancee, it concerns her loss of his love. Music by the great Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill, the same team who created the songs for FUNNY GIRL. This song is far better known among show collectors, though I don't think it gets much exposure in the cabaret circuit. A CD of the score came out at one point, with an extended version of it, which is even better than the short piece actually heard in the film. I may add more songs to this list, as I recall them.

Andrei Petrov is credited with composing the music for the songs for THE BLUE BIRD. Tony Harrison is credited with the lyrics. A 27 January 1974 New York Times news item reported that Alex North and Andrei Petrov were composing the film's score; however, North is not credited in the film, Petrov is credited only with the music for the songs, and Irwin Kostal is credited with the score. On 13 November 1974, Daily Variety announced that co-screenwriter Alfred Hayes was collaborating with composer Randy Edelman on the lyrics. But Hayes is not credited in this role onscreen, and Edelman did not remain with the project.
