GDM and IMR are re-releasing 100 original soundtracks by M° Morricone as 2-CD-boxes. The first box contains LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE and IL RITORNO DI RINGO. This release of LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE seems to be identical to the japanese release by Verita Note. The music and the audio drama from IL RITORNO DI RINGO seem to be taken from the disc GDM/Hillside 4134 (tracks 12 to 21). I don't understand why they don't include all the 12 music tracks from the older disc GDM 2044 or at least some music from UNA PISTOLA PER RINGO.

description from Intermezzo Media
We are launching a new GDM 2CD Album series of 100 Ennio Morricone Original Soundtracks (50 x 2CD Albums). 100 important OSTs of Maestro Morricone spanning from the sixties to date, recorded on 2 discs, one disc for each of the 2 original soundtracks of this series. The 100 titles will be released two by two once a month. We choose a 2 CD box, so that will lower the retail price, compared to a single CD album, and save some money on shipping as well. The packaging is very nice, with an elegant O-Card Sleeve and, later on, we will announce an art design decorated box to store together all the 50 albums of this GDM 100 Ennio Morricone Original Soundtracks series, which is so unique for soundtrack lovers and collectors. Graphic art design by GDM and IMR. Liner notes by Sijbold Tonkens.

LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE (Forbidden photos of a lady above suspicion) 1970 The film LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE (1970) is a Giallo-Movie directed by Luciano Ercoli. In Italy a Giallo-Movie means a thriller movie. The name came from the mystery and crime pulp novels with yellow covers in post fascist Italy. Today Giallo movies are worldwide cult movies. Ennio Morricone started to write music for Giallo movies in 1970. The music for LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE is not an easy listening experience. The music is sometimes complex. Difficult to follow yet always interesting. The use of electronics in combination with orchestral instruments is done in a smart way. The electronic music is used as a single instrument of its own. Not as a replacement for strings or any other instrument. Note this score was never intended to become a soundtrack on CD or LP. It was composed to underscore the film and help it up to a higher level. It worked great in the film. About ten more Giallo movies were made with Morricone,s music. Of which L,UCCELLO DALLE PIUME DI CRISTALLO (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) (also 1970) by Dario Argento is probably best known. However, fortunately, the fame of the composer made that almost everything he did has become available on CD. The theme AMORE COME DOLORE is melodious and beautifully orchestrated. It is one of the few lovely themes on the CD. The theme comes back in QUELLE FOTO in another arrangement. It is in fact a three notes theme for piano. In the track DORICAMENTE we hear I CANTORI MODERNI DI ALESSANDRONI, a vocal group that worked with Ennio Morricone since 1964 until 1974. They did hundreds of films together. On the soundtrack is also the beautiful and recognisable voice of Edda Dell,Orso. Morricone used her voice not for songs but always as an instrument. Another cooperation for many years with Morricone. They worked recently together on the latest Giuseppe Tornatore film LA MIGLIORE OFFERTA (2012) This CD is a remastered edition of the most complete edition, now with an improved sound quality. Enjoy! ===========================================================================
IL RITORNO DI RINGO (The Return of Ringo) 1965 Il ritorno di Ringo is the sequel of UNA PISTOLA PER RINGO, both directed by Duccio Tessari. They were released in 1965 with basically the same cast, starring Giuliano Gemma in the role of Ringo. (nicknamed ANGEL FACE) For Morricone this was his fifth Western, or Spaghetti Western, if you like. The previous year he made name with Per un pugno di dollari (For a Fistful of Dollars), directed by Sergio Leone. The score for the Western is in the typical style of Morricone which made him famous and which has become standard for Westerns ever since. His style for Western movies has been copied by many other composers but never surpassed. The orchestration in Morricone,s music is just as important as the composition. In the score there are some atonal tracks. Apart from this there are also very fine melodic tracks to enjoy. A very nice piece is BARNABA,s BAMBA. Played on 2 guitars as background and a solo harp played by Anna Palomba for the theme. A very original orchestration. The track IL FUNERALE has something you might recognize. The introduction is the same as on the single IL SILENZIO by Michele Lacerenza on trumpet. The very peculiar tracks are 9 and 10. The story is told including dialogues, narration, sound effects and songs. These tracks are originally on the very rare album ARC SA 7 from 1965 issued in Italy. Very interesting is also the track L,INCONTRO CON LA FIGLIA, which was originally composed for the John Huston film THE BIBLE (1964) as part of LA CREAZIONE. The track, as all other tracks for The Bible, were recorded and conducted by Franco Ferrara. According to Maestro Morricone: the best conductor ever. The music has been remastered for this CD and the result is terrific. The music sounds as never before.

Excellent news. I can buy a few I missed, it'll probably involve doubling up on a few titles, but I don't mind.

Not too exciting if it is just a re-issue series (Verita Note are not hard to find), but nice for those who missed them.

True regarding re-issuing, but many GDM & VN are OOP hard to find CD's and pricy. Hopefully the so called remastering will enhance and benefit the scores.

Hi JC

It is indeed difficult to understand why GDM have not taken the opportunity to release a definitive IL RITORNO DI RINGO soundtrack with all available music including the tracks on the GDM 2044 release. I believe there are 4 pieces on that CD that have not been on any other releases of the score. It just seems to be a straight re release of the recent GDM Hillside cd which had the LP recording. There would easily have been enough room on the cd to include the LP recording (music, dialogue and songs) as well as all available music only tracks.

I am especially disappointed as I missed out on the GDM 2044 cd so was hoping this would finally be it, a complete (as possible) recording of this excellent Morricone western score.

Now I am fearing the worst with UNA PISTOLA PER RINGO, that GDM will again not publish a definitive edition and will also miss out the extra music that was on the GDM 2044 release.

Cheers Dave

I see now what you guys are saying regarding the unreleased 4 tracks included on GDM 2044. It is a shame they have not been included here. This series looks like it will not be getting the full definitive treatment it should be getting.

I can't find LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE.

Scratch that, found.

Verita Note still rule the roost.

Has anyone purchased this first release? Is there noticeable improvement in sound quality with the so called 'remastering' that has been done compared to previous releases?

BTW the second two disc CD album has come out as well... 'NOVECENTO' and 'SACCO E VANZETTI'

If GDM is hoping for a complete Novecento, for some reason it sounds hopeless... but I'm hoping as well. razz

NOVECENTO, aka 1900 (1976)

Bernardo Bertolucci's epic, running time 317 minutes, was originally planned as a six-part TV series. But the political content of the film made the director decide to show the movie on the big screen. In some countries the film was cut in two parts to show them separately.
Starring Robert De Niro, Gerard Depardieu, Burt Lancaster and Donald Sutherland in leading roles. It took Donald Sutherland years to dare watch the film because he played such a terrible fascist in the film. Ennio Morricone composed, orchestrated and conducted the beautiful music for this huge production. Although it is not mentioned anywhere on the soundtrack, the vocals in the score sound a lot like I CANTORI MODERNI DI ALESSANDRONI. In 1956 before his film music career, Ennio Morricone wrote 5 VARIAZIONI SU UN TEMA DI FRESCOBALDI (5 variations on a theme by Frescobaldi). The fifth theme is the basis for AUTUNNO - 1922 on the NOVECENTO soundtrack.
This soundtrack has everything you can hope for: drama, romance, suspense and action. There are various themes composed for this film. All of them are interesting to listen to. The popular romantic track ROMANZO turned up on almost every compilation album.

Ennio Morricone wrote music for 10 films that year. That is almost one every month. He has always been a very productive composer. NOVECENTO is one of his finest works. The themes play an incredibly magic atmosphere, bringing the audience to focus on the nobility of the land and its peasants. It is amazing how the music of Morricone focuses on the movie scenes here. A short score compared with the length of the movie! So far all editions of this OST have less than an hour of music. Hopefully one day the complete masterpiece score of this long film will be available.

SACCO E VANZETTI (1971)

A true dramatic story that gets the international press is often fit for a movie. SACCO AND VANZETTI is such a story. Bartolomeo Vanzetti (Gian Maria Volonté) and Nicola Sacco (Riccardo Cucciolla) are two Italian immigrants in America, both falsely accused of a robbery. The story of two anarchists who were charged and unfairly tried for murder when it was really for their political convictions. Giuliano Montaldo directed this political drama.
Previous films by Giuliano Montaldo were: AD OGNI COSTO (1967), GLI INTOCCABILI (1968) and GOTT MIT UNS (1969) all have music by Ennio Morricone. It became obvious that Morricone would work again with the director and he wrote for this film an unforgettable score. As solo instruments he used a bassoon, with that characteristic low and round tone, a little sad, an oboe and organ. The orchestration for this film is not always for large orchestra, but there is a special dramatic ambience. Electronic music that produces the sound effects of the shock of the electric chair here is very original and very suitable to accompany the scenes.

And then there's Joan Baez. Female American singer and lyricist of the two songs in the film. She was 30 years old at the time and already an internationally popular folk singer with a beautiful pure voice. During the end credits in the film, the song HERE'S TO YOU sung by Joan Baez is recorded with the vocal group I CANTORI MODERNI DI ALESSANDRONI. The other song is LA BALLATA DI SACCO E VANZETTI. Ennio Morricone wrote the music and orchestrations for both songs.

After having purchased the first titles in the "100 Ennio Morricone Original Soundtracks " collection pursuing my 20+-year long Morricone Collecting habit, I think I now have to give up.

It seems that the releases always mix titles that have already been quite recently - circa 2010 - reissued by GDM in near-definitive form, with titles more likely to be considered "long-oop" domestically.

I'm interested in upgrading my old 'Donna Invisibile', 'Il Pentito', 'L'Istruttoria E Chiusa" etc... but sadly the deal is :

- "Il Pentito"...with "Rappresaglia" (same edition as the 2009 GDM release)
- "La Donna Invisibile"...with "Gli Intoccabili" (same edition as the 2010 GDM release)
- "Le Pistole Non Discutono"...with "l'Avventuriero" (same edition as the 2010 GDM release)
- "Il Fiore Delle 1001 Notte"...with "La Cugina" (same edition as the 2011 GDM release )
- "L'Istruttoria..." ...with "Il Diavolo Nel Cervello" (same edition the 2011 GDM release)

The latter title adds even more insult to the general injury in that the 2011 release of "Diavolo..." is currently available at Intermezzo for 14 euros, so they can't even claim that the circa-2010 releases are now oop.

And it's not as if the deal is good: basically it's still 2 for the price of 2 !
There's no way I'll purchase La Donna Invisibile or Il Pentito alone for 27 euros each.

I've not seen anything new listed in this series for months now. Does anyone know what's happening?!

I've contacted Gilberto from IMR a few days ago to ask when the next release is due. No answer yet.

Last year he said REVOLVER is "almost certainly" coming in "early 2016"... let's hope it (or any other release for that matter) won't be long now.

There's also this other thread regarding these 2-CD sets:
