Pardon me, but that's NOT Franklin J. Schaffner in the fifth photo with Charlton Heston.

FILMMUSICNOW:

That;s what I thought when I saw the photo.....so I wondered who the guy really is.

I think he was Larry of the Three Stooges Stand-in or Body Double.

Kinda looks Ed Wynnish too.

Or it could be Heston's "Proper Etiquette" Coach, teaching him how to sit like a lady when wearing revealing rags. Thank goodness his Participles aren't dangling. (That one's for you Bruce!)

You are correct. This is not Schaffner. We did quite a bit of digging to determine the identity of this fellow, directing Heston for publicity photographs on the set of "Planet of the Apes" so it was disappointing to see The Daily Mail publishing this incorrect information. The identity of this fellow is revealed in the book. I will give a bunch of bananas to anyone who can correctly identify this person in this thread.

I can't recall his name (Philippe Halsman maybe?), but I believe he is the portrait photographer responsible for the image of Maurice Evans as Dr. Zaius used in the movie's promotion and posters. I use a cropped version as my avatar.

You're on the right track, Rory. A baby dancing banana for you.

It's famed Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh. He took portraits of everybody from Churchhill, Hemmingway to Bogey and Heston.

I don't have the book, but it's definitely on my Xmas list. It looks like a winner.

Asheville---I hear it's really great this time of year. The closest I ever got to Asheville was working in Greenville, SC.

Got mine from my local Barnes & Noble on Monday. Read it up to the Burton POTA stuff.

Since I've got my own "related" book coming, I don't want to be the first to publicly comment on it here.

I'm VERY curious to know what our resident FSM Ape-experts think of its content.

I'm kind of surprised that there's been no commentary on this book...

...Anyone?

Rory?

I've been waiting for others to chime in. Anyway, I'm generally pleased with it, but wish there was more, especially regarding the original movie. There's plenty of photos I've never seen before, but some of the most interesting are too small and have to be looked at with a magnifying glass. There are several tidbits of info that I was unaware of, and I'm glad to now know of them (such as PLANET's co-screenwriter, Michael Wilson, seeing his script as basically a comedy), but overall the book is less for someone like me, fixated with the original movie since '68, and more for the casual newcomer to the franchise.

And speaking of more, when is your book going to arrive?

I'm knee-deep in layout and corrections. This stuff always takes far longer than you hope! Sorry for the delay, don't want anyone to think I'm stringing them along! ;-)

Plus, this is a two-product project, which might tell you more than I want to reveal!
