Here's an affectionate Halloween tribute to Hammer Films' preeminent symphonic sorcerer, James Bernard.

And an accompanying filmed discussion of Jimmy's final years...

Thanks for sharing this. I've been meaning to start exploring this composer's pedigree for some time now...

Jimmy was a dear soul, and a brilliant, if under rated, composer. His gentle spirit, and sublime artistry are sorely missed, particularly during these unexceptional years when melody on film has been all but forgotten or desired.

James Fitzpatrick at Tadlow Records has just announced that he will be recording two of Jimmy's most spectacular scores, presumably "Horror Of Dracula," and "Curse of Frankenstein" for release, hopefully, during the Halloween season.

Oh yeah baby! None of the previous re-recorded selections from (HORROR OF) DRAC have been entirely successful, and they've all missed the spectacular climactic chase music - although that'll be a devil of a job to get "right". I'm fairly sure I read that one of them was indeed going to be H of D, but I can't remember if CURSE OF FRANK is more than speculation at this stage. It would seem the most logical pairing. Two brilliant scores from two brilliant films.

ADDED A MINUTE LATER
---------------------------
Ah! On the other thread it's "almost" (?) confirmed that they're (HORROR OF) DRAC and CURSE OF FRANK. If that's the case, it is indeed a perfect match. Landmark films, landmark scores.

Yes DRACULA (as it is called except in USA) and THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN ...

A magnificent project, and, if it does well, let's hope that THE GORGON isn't far behind (as I'm told those original tapes are lost).
